Round Seven of the Sydney AFL competition saw Macquarie University Australian Football Club record six wins over the weekend. The Warriors celebrated success in all four senior men’s divisions and were joined by their two under 18’s sides who also scored victories. Each division also celebrated as Umpire Awareness Round by lining up to shake hands with the umpires before the commencement of each game. President Luke Gemmill commented on the gesture saying, “Macquarie University are proud to recognize the efforts of both official and club umpires, and the dedication they have for the game by offering their services each week”.
The Warriors’ Division One side took on North Shore Bombers at Gore Hill and took ascendancy early kicking 12 goals in the first half to set up a 64-point half time lead. Macquarie added another nine goals in the second half to record a 19.12.126 to 5.2.32 demolition of the Bombers. Stephen Brooks (eight goals) and captain Brett Harland (six goals) dominated up forward and finished with 14 goals between them. Coach Lindsay Bassani said while it was great to see his two key forwards kick big hauls, “it was our pressure on the ball and supply into the forward line that was most impressive”. Bassani sang his midfield’s praises further adding, “We went in hard and tough, and that won us the game today”.
Macquarie Reserves also accounted for North Shore in Division Three, kicking their biggest score of the season to run out eventual 129 point victors. For the Warriors, Simon Lawrenson kicked five goals while Pat Barclay chipped in with four. Cameron Ludowyke and James Coburn were amongst the best for the Warriors playing against their former club. Coach Luke Gemmill congratulated his side saying, “We didn’t make the best start to the season, but to the boys’ credit they have stuck to it and are now starting to be rewarded for their persistent efforts”.
In Division Four, Macquarie University shared the goals around as Warren Lal and captain Scott Uglow each kicked three goals, while last years’ leading goal scorer, Rowan Pryor, added another two to his 2011 tally. The Warriors controlled the game from start to finish and accounted for Auburn 14.21.105 to 5.10.40.
At home, the Warrior’s Division Five side rebounded from last week’s loss to post a resounding victory over a depleted Parramatta-Holroyd. Andrew Kent continued his rich vein of form kicking nine goals to stretch his lead at the top of the Division Five goal-kicking list, while vice captain Lyndon Polson also had a dominant impact up forward finishing with five goals of his own.
Unfortunately, the Macquarie University Women’s team was unable to complete the clean sweep for the club, going down by a narrow five-point margin to the Bondi Shamrocks.
Macquarie University travel to Monarch Oval to take on Campbelltown in Division 3 next round while the Warriors will host Saints A.F.C at home in Division 5. Macquarie Women will host Wollongong in Round 3 of the SWAFL while all other grades have a bye weekend. For more information, visit www.muafc.com.au or find us on Facebook.
