Southern Power 1.2-8
The Women Warriors faced their toughest test of the season so far on Saturday, travelling to Gwawley Oval to take on 2nd placed Southern Power.
In wet & windy conditions, and on a very muddy field, the Warriors got off to a great start with the opening two goals through Amanda Farrugia and Aislinn Albury. Kristy Sutcliffe was tremendous with her clearance work and Jessie Wong also presented well up forward. The Warriors took a 15 point lead into quarter time.
The second quarter however was a much tighter affair with Southern Power lifting and winning the clearances out of the middle. But some great work in the trenches from Leah Woldhuis and Loretta Moore eventually drove the ball forward late in the term and the Warriors steadied with a goal to Jess Willemse. The Warriors led by a couple of goals heading into halftime and it was a very tight contest in tough conditions.
After the main break the Warriors came out with more intensity and were able to keep the footy in their forward 50 for the majority of the 3rd quarter. Quick goals to Liz Fassone & Stacey O’Loughlin put a gap on the scoreboard and the girls began to dominate around the ground. Laila Waisu fought hard through the middle and Sarah Botros was on the bottom of just about every pack!
The final quarter was a tremendous effort from the Warriors, and with tired legs and the rain continuing to pelt down, they extended the final margin to 51 points. Amanda Farrugia provided a great target up forward to finish with 3 goals and Aislinn Albury dominated the ruck to finish with 2 goals. Barbara Lynch had a great final term and Lisa Wilson had her best game for the club so far.
The Women now move two games clear on top with six rounds to go in the regular season. Many thanks must go to Gav Nixon for umpiring in the mud, and also to Ashley Gray, Susan Payne and Matt Chaplin for helping out with goals & water.
This Saturday the Warriors host new side Randwick in what will be a competitive game against an fast improving side.
Goal Kickers: A. Farrugia 3, A. Albury 2, L. Fassone , S. O''Loughlin , J. Willemse
Best Players: L. Woldhuis, K. Sutcliffe, A. Albury, L. Fassone, S. Botros, L. Moore
U18's 1.1-7 def by
Moorebank 5.2-32
An 830 start in Warwick Farm is never going to be easy on a wet and cold Saturday in winter but the 18s were up for it. With a full compliment and a win against Moorebank in round one the boys were confident they old get the job done. The first quarter started with fantastic defence that saw the warriors hold out the magpies for a 7 minute period fought solely in their forward half but a break away play saw us scoring at the other end. The second quarter would prove the telling one with a ten minute period costing the warriors 4 goals. This is where the margin would stay in an extremely low scoring game. The fight and determination after half time was exceptional and should give a glimpse of finals footy for the boys to aim towards. A great team effort and a day to be proud of the sportsmanship of the warriors 18s. Felix Dixon had his break out game and will be medicated this week for leather poisoning. He was ably supported by the entire team with outstanding performances from Scott McKinnon, Jake Fitzgerald and the ever reliable Tim Cordner, Sean O'Sullivan and Stephen Veitch rounding out the best afield honours this week.
Goal Kickers: J. Thompson
Best Players: F. Dixon, J. Fitzgerald, S. McKinnon, S. Veitch, T. Cordner, S. O''sullivan
Division 3 14.10-94 def
Southern Power 1.3-9
The Warriors ventured out to a sodden Gwawley oval looking for back to back wins, after a solid come from behind effort against Campbelltown the previous week. Things started well as the Warriors dominated out of the middle. Pharlap was providing exceptional service to the on ballers, as Carter and T bone oumped the ball inside 50 on a regular basis. With a good supply, the forward line got busy and despite the conditions were able to set up a 4 goal quarter time lead with Nick Govers, Jackson Brackin and James Cockerill all looking dangerous.
Things continued in the second quarter as the Warriors continued to dominate. The midfield continually worked hard and anytime the ball crossed the centre line, the back line led by Claw and Donnie kept Southern Power at bay.
After playing in patches throughout the season, the Warriors finally strung together a full four quarter performance, keeping the Power goalless in the second half while adding a further 6 goals of their own to run out convincing 84 point winners.
Goal Kickers: J. Brackin 4, N. Govers 4, J. Cockerill 3, I. Janda 2, A. Robertson
Best Players: C. Mullins, P. Sobb, N. Govers, T. Wolnizer, B. Martin, P. Frost
Division 4 10.2-62 def by
Sydney Hills Eagles 13.13-91
Div 4 travelled out to Bruce Purcer oval to take on the Sydney Hills Eagles. In what was appalling conditions around Sydney we were spared with dry surface and ball which managed to stay like that the whole game.
The boys started off in a slow fashion conceding 4-3 in the first quarter which ultimately cost us the game.
The second quarter was a massive turn around and by far on of the best quarters for the season. Everything seemed to work perfectly. Switches opened up the whole field, the tackles were superb and defence was impecable. Going into the sheds at half time we were down 5-6 to our 4-1.
The third quarter was much like the first. Boys switched off and Eagles managed to score another 5 goals.
Final quarter saw much the same performance as the second with everyone contributing and a massive team effort. After kicking 5 goals we were within toaching our first win of the season but an unfortunate post and quick turn around from the Eagles saw them kick 3 goals pushing the margin out of reach.
In the end it was a massive team effort and lots to take from that game including stringing 4 quarters of footy together.
