In Round 14 of the Sydney AFL competition, University Oval played host to five senior men’s games with Macquarie University recording victories all but one game.
In Division One, Pennant Hills upset Macquarie Uni 8.4.52 to 5.7.37. A serious inury to Brett Harland in the first quarter saw the club captain rushed to hospital and Pennant Hills took advantage of the lack of structure in the Warriors forward line to jump out to an early lead. In a tight affair, Pennant Hills were able to hold their lead deep into the 4th quarter when James Coburn kicked a goal to bring the Warriors back within one straight kick. But the Demons steadied once again to run out 15-point victors. Coach Lindsay Bassani admitted a long injury list was hurting his side, “When you have this many players out, you are going to struggle for consistency, but players must step up when it is their turn on the merry-go-round”.
Division Three saw the Macquarie Uni reserve grade take on the Saints a.f.c. The side from Sydney's south jumped out to an early lead and looked in control at half time as they went into the break 31 points up. But the Warriors came out from the break a different side, and continued to reduce the Saints' lead through some disciplined football. Luke Penrith was proving the difference in the midfield, while Ashwin Govender was causing huge problems for the Saint's defence up forward, and eventually kicked the winning goal from the boundary that put the Warriors in front. At the final siren, Macquarie 10.4.64 had defeated Saints a.f.c 8.12.60 by four points. Coach Luke Gemmill praised his side for their perseverance, “The Saints really had us on the ropes at half time but to the boys credit they stuck to their guns and fought out a tough win”.
It was the second time in two weeks that a Macquarie University side has come from behind at half time to overrun the Saints after the Division 5 side accomplished the same feat the week prior.
Nor-West Jets travelled to University Oval in Division Four hoping to upset the undefeated Warriors. Instead, they were exposed to a forward line shootout between Rowan Pryor (six goals) and Emmet O'Reilly (seven goals) as Macquarie dominated possession from start to finish. O'Reilly starred in his best game for the club, winning ball up the ground and applying pressure in the forward line, in a best-on-ground performance. Coach Matthew Scoular described his team's performance as one of their best for the year as the Warriors' notched a 20.15.135 to 8.8.56 victory.
In Division Five, Macquarie held Camden scoreless in the first quarter while kicking five goals of their own to send out a strong message. Coming off an impressive comeback victory the week prior, the Warriors made it two in a row to defeat the Cats 11.15.81 to 7.5.47. Macquarie shared the goals around with four players each kicking two goals each, while captain Matt Chaplin was adjudged best afield.
This week, Division 1 host Western Suburbs at University Oval from 2.10pm, Division 3 are at home to East Coast, whilst Divisions 4 and 5 travel to Rosedale Park to take on Moorebank.
