NORTH Richmond fifth grade registered its third win from four matches to start the season with a solid seven wicket victory over Freemans Reach at John Wellington Oval 2 (Kemsley Downs, Peel Park, Redbank Reserve) on Saturday.
In the first two-day game of the season, day one started out as perfect fielding weather and after losing the toss, the Jets went into the field and quickly took the upper hand, with Peter 'Pirate' Richardson picking up three early wickets and Jebal 'Willy' Williams another to have Freemo reeling at 4/13 inside eight overs, before talented youngster David McMahon and former Northo player Jay Dunn buckled down and resisted the onslaught to slowly turn the tide.
They put on 60 in a patient 35-over partnership that only ended with a brilliant piece of fielding from Nick 'Austin' Powers, who picked up his fourth run out of the season after 'Rocket' Rod Bayne, who claimed two early catches, whipped off the bails with very sore hands to remove Dunn for 22.
The dismissal came just before the second of four rain interruptions, which made the second half of the day difficult, with the ball becoming greasy and difficult to control and Freemans Reach refusing to lose their heads with 14yo McMahon holding the innings together for an excellent 69 as he made Northo pay for anything loose.
The visitors made through to stumps at 8/135 off 67 overs, leaving the Jets hunting the last two wickets as quickly as possible next week before setting off after the target.
Willy finished with 3/26 off 19 overs and Pirate 3/32 off 13, while Austin (1/12) took the other, but all nine bowlers used kept things tight throughout the day.
The Jets started day two looking to wrap up the Freemo innings quickly, and did so, with Willy picking up his fourth scalp and Matty 'Ginger' Beggs his first without any addition to the score - Rocket's stumping off Ginger giving him three dismissals for the innings.
Northo lost two early wickets in reply, with Austin unlucky to be caught behind down the legside to a great catch from Northo junior Max Biondi, who played a very good game for Freemans Reach, scoring 11 runs, and pouching the catch in 20 overs of excellent keeping.
Mat 'Loz' Laurence missed a donkey drop to make it 2/16, but Harry 'Potter' Stever produced a classy 40 to steady the ship with Brendan 'Jonty' Rhodes, who made 37 not out before Ryan 'Rhyno' Johnston knocked off the required runs with a quickfire 41 not out as North Richmond finished on 3/147 off 40 overs.

ROUND 3
Fifth Grade suffered its first defeat of the 2011-12 season when it went down to premiership favourites Wilberforce in a tight contest at McMahons Park on Saturday. The match was relocated from Woodlands 2 due to the actions of some a people who destroyed the surface before the season, and the conditions at Kurrajong were difficult in the overcast and stormy weather.
After a major battle to field 11 players, Northo was grateful to receive the assistance of Dan Filmer from fourth grade, Matt O’Sullivan, Brayden Symington and under 14 player Lachlan Boyle – thanks to all of you.
Northo was put into bat and struggled to get going, being restricted to 9/112 off the allotted 34 overs in light that was tough for all players all day.
The four super subs led the scoring, with Matt O'Sullivan making a hard-earned 32, Brayden Symington and Daniel Filmer 13 each and young Lachlan Boyle an impressive 11, while Nick Powers and Matt Beggs got 10 each.
In reply, Wilberforce captain Trevor Joseph got his team off to a good start with 42, but Northo fought hard with excellent bowling and fielding, especially from Matt Beggs (2/30) and Jebal Williams (2/33) and when he was dismissed at 5/63 the game was alive. However, as the light deteriorated, Wilberforce’s batting stood up, and with good running between the wickets it was able to work its way to 6/114, passing the target in the 32nd over.
ROUND 2
NORTHO fifth grade made it two wins from two games after a hard fought six-wicket win over Pitt Town in the second of the two Twenty20 clashes at McMahons Park.
After Pitt Town won the toss and batted, the Jets got off to a slow start as the Towners' openers batted through the first 10 overs to put 55 on the board.
Two sharp catches to Jonty followed by an embarrassing miss, alongside some tidy bowling from Ginger (0/11), Eggs (0/14), Willy (2/14) and Austin (1/14) helped pull the visitors back into line, while Kodak (1/18) and Pirate (2/3) ensured a chase of less than a run a ball as the score finished at 7/111.
Rhino (26) and Stan (9) got the chase off to a solid start, putting on 37 before they were dismissed within one run of each other, and when Austin (4) and Willy (18) went, the score was 4/66 and the Jets needed a run a ball off six overs.
With good running between the wickets and sensible batting Pirate (23no) and Potter (24no) safely saw the score to 4/114 with two overs to spare.
ROUND 1
FIFTH grade got its season off to the perfect start with a dominant 127-run victory over Glossodia in the round one Twenty20 clash at Glossodia Park on Saturday.
After acting captain Rod Bayne won the toss and elected to bat, Northo suffered an early setback when Nor-West Jets' recruit Mat 'Stan' Laurence was caught behind off the second ball of the innings, but fellow Jets' newcomers Jebal 'Willy' Williams and Ryan 'Rhino' Johnston set about righting the ship, putting on 42 in quick time before Johnston was lbw for 20.
Willy was joined by livewire club legend Neville 'Manpower' Drury and with good hitting and brilliant running between the wickets, they piled on 117 runs in just nine overs to send the score soaring to 2/159, when Willy was dismissed for a fantastic debut 84.
Shortly after, the unthinkable happened when Manpower was run out shortly after bringing up his half century, but it didn't stop the scoring, with youngsters Harry 'Potter' Stever and Nick 'Austin' Powers makings 14 and 11 respectively before Brett 'Window' Frame clubbed 26 off 10 balls to lift the score to a massive 7/224 off 20 overs.
In reply, some tidy bowling from Rhino and Ben 'Door' Frame ensured Glossodia never got their chase above a run a ball, with young Frame picking up 2/21, and later on Matt 'Ginger' Beggs claimed great T20 figures of 2/8 off three overs to continue the good work.
Willy and Todd Boyle took a wicket each and Nick was brilliant in the field, firing off three run outs to restrict the home team to 9/97.
Northo will aim to make it two from two when it locks horns with Pitt Town at McMahons Park in another T20 match this Saturday.
Thanks to Manpower and Brett and Ben Frame for helping us to field 11 players for round one.
