JUST one week after ascending to the top of the HDCA fifth grade ladder, the North Richmond Jets handed pole position back to premiership favourites Wilberforce with a disappointing six-wicket loss to Freemans Reach at McMahons Park on Saturday.
Having lost an inconsistent decision earlier in the week which resulted in key player Jebal 'Stiffy' Williams joining North Richmond's third grade team, the Jets went into the match against the fifth placed Freemo undermanned, with Peter 'Pi Rate' Richardson and Terry 'TC' Conoulty also on the sidelines and Les 'Carpet' Cass and youngster Jeremy 'Jezza' McFadden making their debuts.
Northo captain Brendan 'Jonty' Rhodes finally won a toss and chose to bat, but despite some wild bowling which saw long hops and beamers as the norm, the Jets' batting line-up found a way to implode, with only two batsmen able to say they didn't sacrifice their wickets to poor shots.
Long hops were hit straight to fieldsmen, rank full tosses missed the bat but not the stumps, batsmen lobbed easy catches under no pressure and slogs also brought celebrations for Freemans Reach, whose fielders stuck to their task and took the opportunities when they were presented.
Jonty top scored with 41 off 57 balls before similarly throwing his wicket away, while Carpet was terrific at the death to get North Richmond to a competitive score, finishing with 38 not out off just 37 balls, with the only unlucky batsmen being Mat 'Lozza' Laurence, whose inside edge ricocheted off his body onto the stumps, and Matt 'Ginger' Beggs, who creamed a full blooded cut shot only to be brilliantly caught in the gully.
Despite all that went wrong, the Jets expected to defend their 8/165, but a string of dropped catches, coupled with bowling that was either too short or too full, allowed Freemans Reach to get a flying start.
The visitors' opening batsmen were both rarely troubled as they smashed the ball to all parts in a 60-run opening stand before Lozza made a double breakthrough, Rod 'Quasi' Bayne taking a good catch from a skied shot and then running out the No.3 with a lucky flick onto the bowler's end stumps to make it 2/67.
When Ginger snared two wickets in one over to make it 4/99 the match was well and truly in the balance, but Freemo found the perfect partnership, with the brick wall at one end and the quality batsman at the other as they put on an unbroken 72-run partnership that lifted them to 4/171 and victory with 56 balls to spare.
Ginger finished with 2/26 off five and Lozza took 1/18 off four, while Jezza was unlucky not to pick up a wicket in finishing with 0/19.
North Richmond journeys to University 2 to take on Bligh Park this Saturday, with the winner being rewarded with second spot on the ladder heading into the Christmas break.
