THE North Richmond Jets fell two wickets short of securing their first outright of victory of season in the Hawkesbury District Cricket Association fifth grade competition at McMahons Park on Saturday, being forced to walk away with six first innings points for a 10-wicket win.
Resuming at 0/79 in pursuit of Glossodia's 87, the Jets had three quick goals in mind - to knock off the nine runs needed, to get young opener Nick Powers (42) to a half century and to push on for a declaration to chase the outright.
The first session went to plan, with Austin racing to his half century and the team taking the lead in the third over of the day before Austin was finally out for an outstanding 53 off 77 balls with nine boundaries in a 96-run opening stand with Terry Conoulty.
The rock at the other end, Top Cat pushed on with Ryan Johnston, knocking off another 30 runs in quick time before Rhyno pushed one back to the bowler for 12 and Top Cat was bowled in the next over for 41 off 113 balls with six fours to make it 3/126.
Apart from the loss of Todd Boyle, there was no further incident as Harry Stever (23 off 19) and Mat Laurence took the score to 4/164 at drinks when acting captain Rod Bayne called a halt to proceedings with a lead of 77 runs.
With about three and a half hours to secure the other four points on offer, the Jets started well with Peter Richardson and Blake Fraser removing the openers with just one run on the board before a patient 41-run stand between Glossy's best two bats, S Milner and Jones, soaked some valuable time off the clock.
Lozza took a one-handed overhead catch to break the partnership off Matty Beggs, which brought the opposition's hitter to the crease and he blasted 27 off 16 balls to lift Glossodia towards the Jets' total.
When Ginger won that battle, the visitors lost five quick wickets shortly after and fell to 8/102, leading by just 25 runs with 17 overs left in the match - the highlight being the stunning reflex snaffle by Pirate in his follow through that almost ripped his arm out of the socket to dismiss Ben Reeves.
Unfortunately, that's where the joy would end for Northo and Glossodia held on to finish at 8/122 when stumps were called seven overs early, knowing a run rate of over 15 would be required even if the home team had picked up the two wickets immediately.
Pirate finished with 4/40 off 13 overs, Gingers got 2/30, Frase had 1/23 and Loz 1/11 as the Jets remained second on the ladder heading into the last two-day match before Christmas, against Pitt Town at Pitt Town Sports Club over the next two weeks.
