A GUTSY Bligh Park gave North Richmond a big fright before the Jets wrapped up a 40-run victory in their HDCA round five clash at Kurrajong's McMahons Park on Saturday.
With rain threatening at the start of play, captain Jonty Rhodes, who (contrary to popular belief) was not completely incapacitated two days prior, decided to declare the Jets' first innings closed on the imposing day one score of 7/286 and set Jebal Stiffy Williams and Matty Ginger Beggs the task of picking up crucial early wickets.
And they didn't let the team down, bowling accurately to tie down the Parkies' batsmen from the outset, with Stiffy picking up two early scalps to have the visitors reeling at 2/9 after 10 overs - Stiffy had 2/1 off five by this stage.
The fielding produced was some of the best this correspondent had seen at this level and would have pleased captains at State or even International level.
When Blake 'I forgot you wanted me to play' Fraser knocking over the other opener shortly after, the score was 3/22 and Northo was on their way, before a 51-run fourth-wicket partnership edged Bligh Park back into the contest.
But when Hot Toddy Boyle picked up two quick wickets, one through an excellent catch by his son Lachlan at mid-on, was followed by a great catch at fine leg from Tony Scorpio Joyce, the Jets were back in charge at 6/89.
A third wicket to Stiffy just before drinks in his second spell, backed up by an excellent piece of bowling from young Lachie, who shattered a bail to claim a wicket in his first over, left the Parkies at 8/120 at the second drinks break and it seemed only a matter of time before the win was achieved.
Unfortunately, that was exactly what went wrong for North Richmond, as the captain made the mistake of thinking too far ahead and the rest of the team also dropped its intensity as Bligh Park No.7 David Lloyd and his son Rohan launched a spirited fightback.
They put on 53 for the ninth wicket with Rohan making a well-compiled 22 before Frase trapped him in front at 9/173, and the rally wasn't over as No.11 Peter Brett joined Lloyd and they set about a seemingly impossible task to score 114 for the last wicket to win.
Some excellent batting coupled with fielding that was the exact opposite of early in the day (six dropped catches) conspired together as Bligh Park quickly rolled towards the target and at the next drinks break the score was 9/242 and the smiles had been replaced by worried expressions.
However, a bit of soul searching in the break brought the team back together and Stiffy finally got one through Lloyd on the first ball of the third over after drinks to dismiss the Parkies for 246, with the Jets feeling an overwhelming sense of relief that they didn't let the six points get away.
Stiffy finished with 4/27 off 12.1 overs, Frase provided great support with 2/14 off eight and Hot Toddy picked up 2/42, while Ryno Johnston claimed 1/32 and Lachie Boyle capped an excellent day with figures of 1/13 off four overs.
The Players' Player votes went to Stiffy with 3, Lachie 2 and Frase 1.
This week the Jets will be chasing their third win in a row when they take on Glossodia in a two-day match at McMahons Park, and they will be expecting a much tougher match than in round one, when Northo won a Twenty20 fixture by 127 runs.
