We kicked off our Sydney AFL finals series catering commitment this past weekend and it was a great success.
We had less than favourable weather at a venue a long way from home but with the talent and grit that I know that we have at Bensons Lane we were able to provide a very high level of food and beverage service to spectators, players and AFL officials alike at the seven games played.
The success was a measure of the effort and commitment put in by a number of the Jets’ finest and I for one am extremely proud to know them as Nor-West people, and more so as friends. New and not so new members of our club shouldered the responsibility to make this a success.
I know that in one form or another we are all volunteers, however, it is important that the ones that stood up should be mentioned as this was all pretty new territory for all of us and it did take a huge effort to make it work.
As co-ordinator I was very fortunate to have the invaluable assistance of Jim, Jeanette, Bully, Taryn, Shagga, Jelder, Stewie, Donnie, Collo, Pirate, Ali, Jonty, Benny, Guns, Robbo, Andy, Domma, Jenny, Oyster, Wanga, Ellie and of course my long suffering wife Amanda.
From this group we need to realise that there has been a number involved with several weeks of preparation work, along with time taken to move stock last Friday in torrential rain when most of us would not have ventured out. There are also quite a few that backed up on Sunday after a huge effort on Saturday.
We have another three weekends of commitment to the finals series, culminating in the big one on September 10 at Blacktown.
We need everyone to put their hands up and, once committed, not to withdraw your offer of help. We all get busy but this is important. It is a great opportunity for our club to make a name for ourselves and to raise some much needed funds.
We need all hands on deck, not reasons why it can’t be done, and I would hope that between now and the end of the finals series that everyone has a go at lending a hand.
I know there are names that I have mentioned above that will back up again and again to help. That’s their nature but we need some new faces to add to this list.
Let’s all get involved and make this our major fundraising effort for 2011.
