Campbelltown headed to Pioneers Park with confidence of a good performance, but the final score failed to reflect the fierce contest. From the beginning of the match the Campbelltown Reserve grade was under the pump with Randwick having the better of the early inside 50's and Campbelltown were brave in holding Randwick to 4 goals 4 in the 1st quarter shutout.
In the 2nd quarter Campbelltown started like a house on fire with 2 quick goals 1 coming off Chris Fretwells boot, a snap shot from the sideline, followed by a set shot form Terry Dransfield 20 meters out had Randwick on the back foot and Campbelltown back in the game with the score 28 to 12.
A brain explosion early in the 2nd quarter cost Campbelltown dearly as one of our players was Red Carded. Leaving Campbelltown down to 17 men.
From there things went pear-shaped as Randwick ran away with it on the score card as Campbelltown was forced to play the final quarter with 14 men, injury taking its toll, and with no bench it was always going to be a tough ask, although every player put in 110% to the final whistle
Standouts in the match included First Gamer Gus who took out Players Player and was arguably best on ground. Top efforts by Luke and Josh Down back kept the final score card respectable and good Forward work by Chris Fretwell has Campbelltown optimistic about their chances moving forward. In addition it was good to see so many 1st Gamers play well. The potential these players showed on the weekend was amazing and the 118-12 scoreline is almost a smokescreen hiding Campbelltown reserve grades team ability.
The worst news to come out of the match was a savage injury to Chris Jordan, which didnt help the cause as he left the field after playing his heart out, covered in blood showing his true colors, in giving his all for his team. Campbelltown can ill afford losing players of his experience and we wish him a speedly recovery.
Next Saturday, Campbelltown Reserve's face Macquarie University at Monarch, early signs suggest a much improved performance with the return of Jarrod and Sean and other missing players. Mac Uni will have to be at their best to come close to the Blues this week. All players are encouraged to get down to training to maintain their positions in the side.
