Round 6 last weekend marked the completion of the first 3rd of the Home and Away season in the NSWAFL Sydney Premier League and Campbelltown currently sits with 2 wins and 4 highly competitive losses. A review of the first third of the season saw the Blues given a tough draw against the current top 3 teams in the competition. The young Blues have emerged from these tough early season encounters confident they can make a surge up the ladder during the next third of the season. Close, hard fought losses that could have gone the other way against these top 3 teams in the competition has fuelled the confidence and self-belief in the playing group.
Last weekend, for the second weekend in a row, the Blues came up against an opposition sitting on top of the ladder in Manly. Being the only remaining undefeated side in the competition, Manly were always going to be formidable opposition. Despite this, the Blues were quietly confident that an upset was on the cards. The game was a tight defensive affair with limited opportunities for forwards. Kyle Somerville was resolute in defence and Paul Green showed tremendous dash from the backline in the unfamiliar role of being a defender. Campbelltown Captain Matty Edwins showed his usual class and led from the front as did class recruit Matty Withers up forward. Bryce Joynson and Hamish Sherwood were tireless in the mid field and Cameron Gordon dominated in the ruck. The game was in the balance all day but in the end Manly were able to take advantage of their opportunities on a few more occasions to eventuate as winners.
Coach Neil Brunton was disappointed but optimistic after the match, “Last week’s clash against North Shore was very physically demanding and some of the young lads appeared to be feeling the effects of that game late in the match today. Despite the result our self-belief is growing and we are definitely on the improve. The next third of the season where we challenge teams fighting for that final spot in the finals will be critical.”
