It was all or nothing for the Under 18 Goannas at Blacktown on Saturday, with the winner of their clash against Macquarie Uni booking a spot in the Grand Final against Manly.
Looking to atone for their loss to the Wolves last week, the Goannas made a very strong start to the game, easily having the better of the early exchanges, and at quarter time held a 9 point lead which would have been more if not for some inaccurate kicking.
The second quarter was a more free flowing affair with both teams showing plenty of attack but were wasteful in front of goal. With both teams having 8 scoring shots for the quarter, the 2 goals to non from the Goannas was crucial in the context of the game, extending the lead to 19 points at the long break.
The crucial third quarter was a very tight one, as both teams battled to gain the initiative, but by the time the last quarter started the Goannas had edged out further in front.
Whilst the game was just about sealed, both teams knew that the nature of finals meant that anything could happen. In the end, the Goannas made sure there was no doubt about who would be the victors, kicking 6 goals to 2 in the last quarter to run away with a 47 point win to secure a spot in the Grand Final.
Jaryd Mayne was named bet on ground with a fantastic running game, with Arin Rickett also providing plenty of drive from the centre. Chom Manut, Adrian Boelhouwer, Jake Havey and Harry Spiteri were all standout performers in a great win by the team.
Next Saturday the Goannas take on Manly for the title. Be at Blacktown International Sports Park at 8.45am
Final result: Goannas 11.16.82 def Macquarie Uni 4.11.35
