The Div 1 Goannas travelled in to Henson Park to take on UTS to kick off their finals campaign for 2013.
With the teams having shared the spoils in their 2 games so far this year, it was always going to be a tight contest. The first quarter saw the Bats get the early jump, but towards the end of the quarter the Goannas started to get the momentum heading their way, and at quarter time there was just 1 goal in it.
The Goannas continued to control the game to start the second quarter and soon hit the front, and by the time the half time siren sounded the boys were 7 points up and full of confidence.
The third quarter is always decisive in finals, and it proved so again here. The Goannas had the best of possession and field position; however they could not convert this in to scoreboard pressure with a number of opportunities missed. A late goal against the run of play to UTS got them to within 10 points by the last change and they had their tails up.
The Bats had the better of the play to start the final quarter, with the Goannas defence holding on keeping them in the lead. Soon enough however the wave of attack after attack became too much, and late in the last quarter the Bats kicked their 3rd goal of the quarter to hit the front. With a few minutes left the Goannas threw everything the had at UTS, but they could not get the score they needed and went down by 4 in a heartbreaker.
Arin Rickett was best on ground having played a fantastic game across the midfield, with Bryce Mayne and Jack Schwarze also providing plenty of run through the middle. The Terrey brothers, Josh and Ryan, were brilliant all day and put in tirelessly, while Scott Maguire was strong all day in the ruck getting first hands to the ball more often than not.
Final Score:
Div 1 - Goannas 7.15.57 lost to UTS 8.13.61
