On a very hot morning we took the field not knowing our ability against quality opposition. Two quick goals showed the Power we were not going to be an early pushover. Two more goals had us leading at the first change, 25 to 13. A hamstring injury to fullback Shad Wahid saw a reshuffle in the backs.
The second term was a real arm-wrestle. Power fought back to level at half time - 32 all. More injuries came with Brad Burn breaking his arm. Fatigue started to rob us of our pace advantage and all our players were exhausted at the long break.
10 gallons of water later and a real rev-up from myself and captain, Huddo saw us ready to resume the fight.
And fight we did! Power were held score-less for the whole third quarter. Compo was knocked out by a king hit from behind to end his day, leaving only one interchange player for the rest of the match. Nineteen players staggered in at three-quarter time to try and rehydrate and reboot for the final onslaught.
My hope that Power would wilt more than us was short-lived. They kicked three quick goals to take the lead. To our credit, we refused to lie down. Another goal to us pulled the score even. However, Power poured it on and kicked another five goals to run away with the match. We continued to fight, kicking two goals. To highlight the Goanna courage, we scored our last major with 43 seconds to go.
The final score, Power, 12.8.80 to Parra 9.6.60. Goal kickers were Drew Lawrence 2, Adam Townsend 2, Matt Ophof 1, Fadi Mikha 1,Mitch McFarlane 1, Trent Whalan 1.
In summary, fitness was our worst enemy. The effort of EVERY player made me proud of our first outing together. Many guys stood up, Huddo, Matty O, Towner & Compo, to name just a few. The first year players adapted well. A special mention for Blake McFarlane who toiled all day, mainly in the ruck. He was far and away, our “best on ground”. Drew Lawrence was also a revelation. Up front, He kicked goals. When moved onto the ball he hunted and attacked constantly. What a find. I would like to give a special mention to Matt Smith. He may not be a Garry Ablett. However, he gave everything he had and more, putting his body on the line many times in attack and defence. Many thanks to Chom from the U/18’s, Hookey who ran messages all day for every grade & The Rev for his help and advice.
In closing, I would to say THANKS to each and every player for your efforts. You made my first match as coach an enjoyable and exciting day. With a little more work on skills and a lot more work on fitness, we can be there in September. A great Day.
