Round 10 saw the Goannas senior teams taking on UTS and the Under 18’s hosting Pennant Hills.
The day was very much a classic ‘four seasons in one day’ scenario, with torrential rain and sunshine both making appearances to turn Charles Mac into a hazy quagmire.
The Under 18’s kicked off the day against Penno, and once again put in an effort that did the club very proud despite not getting the result that they were after. The 70 point margin is not reflective of the pride the boys showed, and everyone is confident their next win is not far away and the future of the club is looking very solid.
Scotty Nolan was best on ground, with Matt Burn, Matt Cahill, Bryce Mayne, Tim Watson and John Burwood also having very strong games.
Division 4 took the field and 5 minutes in copped a massive downpour…only for sun and steam to arrive 10 minutes later! The team was competitive for most of the match, but just couldn’t get the ball inside the forward 50, and in the end went down to a very skilled UTS side.
Ben Allen continued his fantastic season with another best on ground performance, and was well supported by Daniel Bamforth, Tim Johns, Matt Maddocks, Grant Smith and the returning Scott McLean.
The start of Division 3 saw the most open and shut winner of the Pink Shirt Award ever, with Lee Nolan rocking up to the game…..minus his footy bag. Thankfully some club mates provided some loan equipment to get him started until his gear arrived at quarter time. Once again the boys showed some very good play in patches, but were unable to show this on the scoreboard. The team is showing signs of improvement every week and it should not be too long before the duck is broken.
Hubert Jesuratnam was the best on ground in his 2nd game in reserve grade, continuing his great development. Damien Vassallo also continues to excel in his first season, being one of the best performers in his maiden reserve grade appearance. Dane Ramsey, Peter Zuvela, Johnny Mannion, Shannon Altorjay were also bright performers in a much improved performance from the last game against the same opposition.
The Division 2 team took to the field looking to end a 2 game losing streak and gain a win against another finals contender. With the conditions well and truly favouring the Goannas, the boys got off to a flying start, kicking 7 goals to 2 in the first half in a real slog.
The second half became a real dogfight, with the Goannas working hard to keep repelling a UTS side that came out firing. In the end, the boys were able to hold on despite only kicking 1 goal in the 2nd half to record a 15 point win, their first against UTS since the 2004 finals.
Grant Webb, John Maniscalco, Jason Wilson and Ben Dyhrberg dominated the midfield and gave us the impetus we needed all day, Andrew Munns led from the front and controlled the backline, with Luke Walsh and Shaun Costello giving strength and creativity up forward.
A special mention also to Mancey, who was the only bloke on the field who still had a uniform that resembled blue by the end of the game.
