Round 6 saw the
Goannas christen another adopted home ground, with Kelso Oval being the "home away from home" for the day. Thankfully the ground was not the same lake it was during last years Prelim final, but conditions were still tough with a howling wind swirling all day.
The
Under 18'Ss side took on
Sydney Uni in the opening match of the day, searching for their 2nd win of the year. Unfortunately this was not to be their day, as a Uni side full of run outclassed the young Goannas to come away with a convincing win.
Division 4 took on the top of the table
Sydney Uni in what would be a great test of how the team has come along.
The Goannas came out firing, and against an undefeated side put on plenty of pressure, holding Sydney Uni to 1 goal and went into quarter time with a 13 point lead. After quarter time, the visitors switched on and showed their true form, however they did not always have it their own way as the Goannas were able to still keep pressure on. The final result of a 98 point loss does not reflect the great effort the boys put in on the day.
Division 3 had a tough mission on their hands, taking on the ladder leaders
UNSW/ES. The endeavour of the players could not be questioned throughout the whole game, who gave it their all to the very end, however they were outclassed by the undefeated Bulldogs.
Division 2 took on Sydney Uni for the first time since 2006. With the Goannas in 4th and the Students in 5th, it was always going to be a tough battle between two teams fighting for a spot in the top 4.
It was the Goannas who started the stronger, dominating possession in the first quarter, but inaccurate kicking meant that the quarter time margin was only 8 points. A more even second quarter followed, and even with the Goannas numbers depleted due to some wardrobe issues, the lead was maintained at the long break.
The second half saw the Goannas come out even more determined, and in what was one of their better performances of the season, the home team managed to keep the visitors goalless in the third quarter before sealing the win with a 3 goal to 1 final quarter, prevailing in
the tough conditions by 35 points.
The Goannas now sit clear in 4th position and will look to continue an impressive start to the season.
