The last home and away game for 2013 and it was another glorious sunny day. A day that started at Gore Hill before moving across to Weldon for the seniors later in the afternoon.
A 9am start for the Under 18s, taking on defending premiers Sydney Hills Eagles. It was a bright start for the Bombers, with two early goals to lead by three points at quarter time. But the Bombers were unable to score a goal in the second term, while the Eagles peppered the goals, missing more than they kicked; and by half time the Bombers were 12 points behind.
The Bombers kept working through the second half, but the Eagles were pulling away. Although the Bombers scored some goals in the second half, it wasn't enough to prevent a 38-point loss.
That brings to an end the season for the Under 18s. We thank our young Bombers for their efforts in 2013. The future looks good at North Shore, and we hope our Under 18s players will stay at North Shore and play a part in the bright future of our club.
Next on was Div 1. It's been a challenging season for our reserves, but they started brightly in this game; and the scoring shots flowed quickly. Not all of them went through for goals, but they were keeping the scoreboard ticking over as the Bombers raced to an 18-point quarter time lead; a margin that remained intact through the second quarter.
With the Bombers still 17 points ahead at the last change, they were looking good. But they had to survive a scare in the last quarter as the Eagles kept coming, at one stage the margin getting back to 2 points. But they defended grimly, and a late goal was enough to get over the line and claim the win.
A challenging season for Div 1, but finishing on a positive note. Thanks to everyone involved with our Div 1 team for your efforts in 2013.
Top spot was on the line at Weldon Oval, and there was a healthy crowd on hand to take in the game, including a numerous North Shore contingent. But the Bombers were unable to score in the opening quarter, facing a hard, physical game from Manly. Thankfully the Wolves weren't kicking straight, but the Bombers were put under plenty of pressure.
Early in the second term, a bullocking run by Ron Wason through the centre saw him go long to get the Bombers on the scoreboard. Shortly after, Lachy Hayres converted a free. But they were rare highlights in a first half where the Bombers were under plenty of pressure, trailing by 16 points at half time.
It just wasn't our day, and it got worse in the third term as the Wolves added four unanswered goals. The hard, physical nature of the game saw tensions threatening to boil over in a sometimes spiteful quarter, but with the three quarter time siren sounded with the Bombers 40 points in arrears, it had been a disappointing afternoon. Even with three goals in the last quarter, it wasn't enough to avoid a hefty defeat.
And so we miss out on the minor premiership. We'll be playing in the qualifying final next Saturday at Henson Park, against St George.
