Below is a list of the senior players of the North Shore Bombers Football Club. Each including a player profile outlining their football acheivements, both the highlights and the lows. As well as some other information about their pre-game rituals and favourite thursday dinners.
Jon has been an assistant coach at UNSW-Easts and last season was Director of Coaching at St. George. Jon has also been actively involved as a coach with both the Sydney Swans Academy and the AFL Talented Player Program.
Ash Naylor will be coaching the reserve team, in the competitive Division 1 competition. Ash has been playing at North Shore since 2005, after moving up from Victoria where he played in the strong Geelong Football league. Ash had a season ending knee injury mid way through last season. Through succession planning, Ash took on an assistant role with the Div 1 team, before being handed the reigns as coach for the last three rounds of the 2011 season.
Nick has this year taken on the role of Div 4 coach and current club treasurer. With more than a decade of service as a player, and life membership to the club, Nick will be leading and directing from the field, as he will still be pulling on the boots and snapping goals from the boundary line
Jamie O’Dell will coach the skilful Under 18 team for season 2012. Jamie first played with North Shore in 2001 in the Under 18’s. In over ten years at the club, he has won many team and individual awards , as well as captaining the reserve team in 2005 at a young age. Jamie’s focus will be on preparing the Under 18 players to be able to make the step up into the senior football ranks and develop future leaders of our senior teams for years to come.
“Boris”, over the phone would give you the impression of a 12 year old boy looking up towards puberty, but with the realisation that you don’t have to be a good boxer to win a fight has meant a steady stream of gym visits over the last 18 months to painstakingly reveal that bones can produce muscle. Boris is another Under 18 graduate who has become a club stalwart and one of those figures you know will give everything he has to help out the team and his mates.
Playing his first season of senior football in 2008, Adrian was a member of the undefeated North Shore Wildcats U18 premiership team in 2007 and was best on ground in the Grand Final.
The entire New Zealand nation rest upon the broad, self quoted, “Bear Like” shoulders of one Ben “Jammin” Sykes in the quest for the first ever player to win an AFL premiership for Australia’s ugly half sister! The Silver Fern emblazed on his arm and his birth year largely embedded on his chest portrays an intimidating ‘on paper’ persona, however this is one that his baby Cadbury milk like face proves wrong. “Benjammin” has deftly pace alongside a mean side step and will no doubt be in the mix for the Bombers finals hopes! Choice Bro!!!
“BJ” has black swirls in his red blood stream as the North Shore way of life was engrained in him from birth, youngest son of Life Members Al & Liz, his football has only become more poetic with the prevalence of his chest hair. Alongside brother Dale on the field, and sister Chelsea & Mel off, “BJ” will strike notoriety with his mix of hard ball gets and stealthy pack ball clean ups. Mr 7
“Big Puppa Bear” is the heart beat of North Shore training, his constant chat and thick frame make him a formidable figure around Royal Gore Hill. A committee member, social liaison and reserves captain make him a valuable asset to any club and one that will be sadly missed when he marries his sweetheart Bubbles in the latter stages of 2012. Mr 38
“Mervin Hill” is considered the string that binds the Bombers back 6, a Sydney representative player and notorious mouthguard thrower Mervin is much alike to an “Inspector Gadget” with his lanky extremities and excellent closing speed. If you look at the local cafes on Saturday mornings you will often see Mervin having tea and scones with the Sydney AFL umpires Anton & Frank.
Captained the 2006 U18 Premiership winning side. As well as playing in the premiership winning 2007 Premier Division side.
“Luscious Lips Big D” is North Shore’s premier Full Forward, a demanding enforcer of the goal square, feared amongst those in his path, and commonly known as the “Indian Pacific”, Danny epitomises what traditional full forwards are all about. “Red” hasn’t handballed since his Auskick days and is more comfortable slotting them from outside 50m, but with experience comes responsibility and his work with the juniors has been paramount to the clubs development.
“Son Of steVen” and “Brother Of BOS”, Jarryd is suffering from a major Mark Waugh syndrome whereby he is coming to terms with the fact he is the second best athlete in his family. “SOS” has a rubber like flexible thumb and can’t leave his house without it being in a cast but none of this has halted his ambition to be the Bombers No.1 Centre Half Forward. Only a matter of time!
“Hyphen” has thrust himself forward to be arguably the fittest senior player at North Shore, an Under 18 graduate at the Bombers who thrives on the hard stuff and will often be found bending fence palings and head butting walls in an effort to be ready for upcoming matches. “Two Dad’s” hasn’t seen a carbohydrate since 2008 and he is adamant his kicking ability has only increased with the size of his biceps. Mr 43.
“Stevie J” was drawn to the pastures of Royal Gore Hill by its excellent goal post position and close proximity to a hospital, he has amerced himself into the culture of the Red & Black much alike a white glove onto the hand of Michael Jackson. Built for speed and comfort “Mitch’s ” persona is indicative of his yellow automobile without the speed the comfort... but don’t push him he’s mean, uncoordinated and sluggish off the mark!
One of the most promising junior players in the competition, Lachlan was one of the youngest members of the 2007 North Shore Premiership team. He represented the NSW/ACT RAMS in 2008 and has been a NSW Scholarship holder with the North Melbourne Kangaroos. Lachlan was also selected in the 2008 Sydney AFL Team of the Year on the wing, and has kept his spot in first grade this past year.
“Melon” is only 2 years into his tenure at North Shore and as a new recruit to the red & black has instantly become a cult hero, his solid frame & rugby tackling ability have overcome his hasty lactic acid build-up problem to see him become a regular in the starting 18. “Lemon” will thrive with the emergence of Crows Nest Hotel as a sponsor of the Bombers.
“Superman” could lay out a wall if it ran at him and comes from the “super sporting mecca” of Wagga Wagga. The no complainer, no hassle defender is probably one of the best talkers at the club having said ‘Hello” once when he first turned up. His array of comic book hero shirts would put the stars of the “Big Bang Theory” TV show to shame. One to watch of 2012.
“Bieber”, has taken the reins from former Captain & Life Member Matthew Parker as North Shore’s nice guy, but the calm and collected demeanour of the Off-Field Michael is shelved every Saturday afternoon by the ‘cornered ferret’ type attitude of On-Field Michael. Game changer!
“Donatello” of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles clan, has forged himself into our attacking forward three with his blinding pace and defensive pressure. One of four peas from the Mutant Turtle pod, Patty wears a headgear for just cause, as his ability to inject himself into a pack head first has seen him shouldered to the sideline too many times for his mothers liking.
“Dick”, has absolutely flogged the boys this pre-season as our resident strength and fitness guru, having entrenched himself deep in the bombers backline, week in week out “Dick” finds himself pushing back on bigger opponents, but what he lacks in size he more than makes up for with his skill and enthusiasm. A firm favourite of all the boys Richie is a pillar of strength around the club and will need to continue to shut down the best full forwards in the competition for the Bombers to go all the way this September.
“Rockstar” has moulded the Number 25 jersey to his gorilla like body frame for close to 10 years now, and along with his multiple premierships for North Shore, being a Sydney AFL representative captain and resident enforcer Ron will again be ensuring his body be encompassed by ice baths directly after games in order to see next week’s fixture. The widow’s peak of his forehead will only add to his aero dynamic top half and any Bombers fans should rest easy knowing his heart is still with North Shore despite it falling heavily for red headed beauty Amy.
“Brother of” Lachlan Pryor, will play in Bombers colours when we can pry him from the modelling catwalk, Rory has, unlike his brother, been marinating in the deep end of the gene pool and the Bombers will relish his Sydney Swans experience to thrust them towards September glory.
Despite his diminutive stature Sammy has a heart half the size of Ayres Rock and with more self concussion statistics under his belt than Mike Tyson’s KO figures we see Sam return from a year in Shanghais where he is still suffering from an inflamed infection of yellow fever. Gore Hill’s lights had better be working throughout the year because Sam’s new found Ninja abilities in the dark could mean demise for any unsuspecting individuals strolling around the boundaries.
Sam “Gives the Best” Jackson is the epitome of a competitor... large, hungry, and with a running style that is reminiscent of a desperate Rat trying to escape a bucket. Having tasted the blood of senior football, “Head” is adamant he will instil his influence on the Bomber centre pack and competition alike soon after he gives the head coach a manicure and pedicure.
“Tipper” “Lingy” or “Michelangelo” of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle pack, with his paranormal ability on the field to find a fellow red headed team mate with the ball, Tipper will hurt opponents if given some space. Don’t let his height hurt you as he personifies the term “Fiery Red Head”.
“Raphael” of the Teenage Mutant Ninja pack, screams innocence with his conditioned black hair and boy band good looks but don’t be fooled as if his right foot gets a swing at it the footy it will cause damage to any side. Tommy’s favourite activity outside of AFL is juggling, and will often be found busking on George street outside the cinemas.
