Sunday afternoon at Blacktown produced glorious sunshine, with Blacktown Olympic Park looking a treat. But sadly the first quarter from North Shore was far from glorious. The Macquarie Uni team started far quicker than the Bombers, and it took some time for the Bombers to regather their composure. The Warriors ran in 7 first quarter goals while keeping North Shore scoreless; a disappointing opening term.
It was more of the same in the second term, with the Warriors consistently being first to the ball and the Bombers struggling to get into the contest. To make matters worse, the Bombers lost Anthony Lowes, Chris MacKinnon and Daniel Kulk to hamstring injuries during the second term to leave the Bombers with just one on the bench. The Bombers finally broke their duck in the final seconds of the quarter, with Kade Tangney curling home a goal, but the Bombers trailed by 73 points at the long break.
With the game already decided, there was little to excite in the third quarter. The Bombers scored their second goal during the third term, but trailed by 91 points at the last change. The injury toll worsened in the final quarter, with James Costi and Josh Cole departing the scene with ankle injuries, forcing the courageous Chris MacKinnon to return to the action. But although the Bombers won the last quarter, the damage was done and the final losing margin was 81 points.
It has been a good season for our reserves team. The increasing depth at North Shore is such that we are the only non-university team to get out reserves into the finals. And an exciting new opportunity may be opening up to expand our playing numbers further - more details to come shortly. But a return to the finals was as far as our seconds could go this season - but coach Damian Whittle and the boys can be rightly proud of the improvements that have been made this season.
Final Score - Macquarie Uni 18.7 (115) def North Shore 4.10 (34)
Goals : Kade Tangney 2, Richard Lynch 2.
