Sunday afternoon saw Blacktown Olympic Park bathed in sunshine as the Bombers took on Sydney Uni in sudden death semi final action.
The first quarter was a high-scoring shootout, but the Bombers found themselves in trouble early. The Bombers were unable to put the Students under any sustained pressure, and leaked too many easy goals. There were three North Shore goals kicked, but it wasn't enough to trouble the Students; and at quarter time North Shore were 27 points in arrears.
It didn't get any better in the second quarter, as the Bombers again consistently found themselves second to the ball. Frustration was beginning to set in, but the Bombers rallied late in the quarter. Late marking goals to Lachy Pryor and Lachlan Clancy gave the Bombers some hope, but they still trailed by 33 points at half time.
A mark and goal to Pat Brackin in the opening minutes of the third term raised hopes that the Bombers could maybe steal the game after a poor start, but such hopes were quickly dashed. The Bombers were unable to score another goal until Teddy Strudwick scored after the siren; and in the intervening period the Students had kicked six goals to put the issue beyond doubt.
Day was turning into night, the sun setting on North Shore's season. And the Bombers were unable to produce anything of note in the final quarter, as the losing margin blew out to 91 points. It was a disappointing end to the season; but there have been plenty of positives to come out of the year. The Bombers finished fourth, one position higher than last year, and the ongoing improvement in some of our players has been a joy to watch. 2011 has seen the Bombers lay the foundations for future success, and we look forward to seeing what 2012 will deliver for our club.
