The Under 14 Netballers are the only side left in the finals for CDHBU Power after the 1st semi final held last Sunday, were the Under 14 & 17 footballers both bowed out.
The Netballers are through to this Saturday’s preliminary final after defeating Walla Walla 43 to 18. The team got off to a great start with a 10 goal lead at quarter time and continued to increase the lead to be in front by 13 goals by half time. The girls never let up in the second half and extended the margin out to 25 goals by the end of match for a great win. Sophie Hanrahan played a great game in defence to take out the Hume League Best on Court. She was well supported by Caroline Svarc who was great in the centre, and fellow defender Erica Hanrahan. This Saturday we hope to see plenty of support for our only surviving team in the finals when they play Culcairn - who topped the ladder the entire year so your support would be great. Good luck girls.
Under 17’s put up a gallant fight before going down by 2 points to Henty in a nail biting contest. Henty were the first side to settle early and with the aid with the breeze added the first 3 goals before Hayden Filliponi was able to kick the Power’s first goal as CDHBU went into quarter time trailing by 15 points 3.3 to 1.0. In the second quarter Lincoln Ash added a long goal before Henty was able to score 2 goals. Hayden Filliponi added one on the run just before half time to make the margin 13 points at half time 5.4 to 3.3. The third quarter was a tight affair with both defences on top with Matt Ross & James Dowling holding firm while the Power’s forwards were struggling to find the scoreboard with the majority of the ball in the Power’s forward line. But the Power could only add 2 points as Henty increased their lead to 18 points at ¾ time 6.5 to 3.5. Henty drew first blood in the last quarter adding a quick goal to send the margin out to four goals. Coach Dean Fitzgerald moved Kane Barbour to full forward & this seem to spark the Power and a goal to Barbour, and then one to Aaron Patterson brought the Power closer. A couple of misses to the Power had the boys closer & when Filliponi kicked a great running goal the margin was down to 3 points with Henty stopping to a walk. Power made one final push but it resulted in a behind & Henty was able to get the ball to the wing when the final siren rang. Hayden Filliponi played a superb game onball running all game & finishing with 3 goals, he was well supported by Matt Ross, James Dowling and Marc Playford who were great down back. Mal Macartney, Nathan Rhodes & Kane Barbour tried all game, along with ruckman Adam Wright. Sam Burke gave another option up forward in the second half after being moved from the backline.
The Under 14’s bowed out after coming up against a very polished Holbrook team that has won 58 of the last 60 matches. The Holbrook side came out with intent in the first term and kicked the first 4 goals before a brilliant banana goal by Ethan Brindley got the Power on the scoreboard as Holbrook lead 4.1 to 1.0 at quarter time. Holbrook’s bigger players got well on top and the speedy young players continued to shine as they kept Power scoreless and added another 3 goals to lead by 38 point at half time 7.2 to 1.0. Coach Rod Lavis ask for a big effort in the second half & the players responded with a much better second half. Captain Ben Wilson was giving his all onball & Tom Moloney was given great drive from the backline. The Power was able to keep Holbrook to 1.2 for the quarter, but young boys were only able to add 3 points to trail 8.1 to 1.3. Jacob Bainbridge was able to add the Power’s second goal in the last quarter as the Power went down by 49 points 10.7 to 2.6. Jay O’Donoghue & Ryan Mills tried hard all day, Tom Moloney & Brad Macartney worked hard in defence, while Tim & Josh Gilchrist battled well against bigger opponents. Ben Wilson & Alex Ash gave their all as onballers all day, while Jack Wynne looked lively in the forward line in the second half.
