It was a good weekend for the CDHBU sides, with all three juniors sides winning their finals and progressing to the second week of the finals. The Under 14 netballers were the first side to play on Saturday against Holbrook.
The girls were on fire from the start and raced away to a big win. All the girls played well with Tess Wilson winning the best on court award in their 42 to 13 victory.
On the Sunday the Under 14 footballers had an early start in slippery conditions against Henty, who they lost to just 3 weeks ago. Rod Lavis’ team started well in the first quarter, with Jakob Bainbridge kicking an early goal, while the defence held tight to lead at quarter time 1.1 to nil. It was in the second quarter that the side played great team football doing all the things that Rod asked for as they kicked 4 goals while keeping Henty scoreless to go into half time leading 5.4 to nil. In the third quarter the boys continued to all the team things with Justin Roach & Tom Moloney starting tall in defence as the they again held Henty scoreless while adding another 2 goals to lead 7.6 to nil. The last quarter saw the boys still dominating but the kicking boots were not on as they kicked 1.5 to run out 59 point winners 8.11 59 to no score. Damien Wilson played a great game on ball to win the Hume League Best on Ground, he was well supported by both wingman Ryan Mills & Jordan Lavis who both played great games. Rhys Macartney was great off the half back line, Jay O’Donoghue was always dangerous & used the ball well while Alex Ash got plenty of the ball.
The Under 17’s were next on the field and were playing the Magpies, which they defeated only 2 weeks ago with a kick after the siren. The Magpies made a quick start kicking the first goal, but Power found the goal shortly after through Corey Smith. When great defence by James Dowling, Marc Playford & Luke Murphy stopped a certain Magpies goal & the ball raced down the Powers end and Andrew Wynne snapped a great goal, the Powers supporters knew in was going to be our day. The boys went into quarter time leading 4.1 to 2.1, and in the second quarter the totally dominated kicking 2.4 while holding the Magpies to only a point to lead at the long break 6.5 to 2.2. The midfield was being feed well by ruckman Adam Wright and continued to push head kicking another 3 goals to the magpies one to lead by 42 points at ¾ time 9.8 to 3.2. The boys continue to attack but missed some easy chances in the last quarter as Magpies won the quarter as the boys run out 35 point winners 10.13 73 to 6.2 38. The midfield led by Nathan Rhodes, Hayden Filliponi, Mal Macartney, Kane Barbour & Eddie Leahy were totally dominated giving forwards Corey Smith 4 goals & Jesse Upton 2 plenty of opportunities. Matthew Ross was great at centre half back while Lincoln Ash & Kade Wilson were always dangerous.
This now sees all three Power sides play next Sunday at Walbundrie. So get out there early to see the future of our club.
