CDHBU added cult figure and long time servant Dean Fitzgerald to its list of life members at its presentation night last Saturday night.
Know universally around the club as ‘Buzz’ due to his likeness to a cartoon character of the same name, Dean was lost for words when accepting the award.
He typically stated that others may have been more deserving but a look at his achievements left the club in no doubt that he deserved the honour.
Dean first played for Daysdale in 1987 and was still at the club in its premiership season of 1994.
However, Dean could not take part in the big game due to injury.
Dean played 92 senior games for the Magpies and also played 31 senior games for CDHBU after the merger between Daysdale, Coreen and Hopefield-Buraja.
He currently has 234 games in the reserves for CDHBU and counting,
Dean is a member of CDHBU’s reserve grade premiership in 2005.
Dean’s total games across the club add up to 357 but he believes that the tally is higher to due to some games in the Daysdale reserves not being recorded.
Dean has also coached the Thirds for 7 years over two stints, guiding them to the merged identity’s first ever flag in 2003.
Current assistant coach at the Power, Sam Burdon, was a member of that team and he rates Dean as the best coach he has played under.
Dean currenty sits on the Power committee, is the club umprie for the fourths and assists where possible with the club’s youngest stars.
A typical Saturday for Dean would begin with umpiring the fourths, playing reserves and then boundary umpiring the seniors.
Always willing to put his hand up and lend a hand in any way possible. Dean’s off field and on field contribution to the Power ensured that he was a very popular and worthy recipient of his life membership, congratulations.
