Power returned to the winners list defeating Lockhart for the first time since joining the Hume League by 76 points at Coreen.
The Power made their customary good start to the game and had all the ball in their forward line and had 9 shots on goal for the quarter but could only manage 4 goals and with Lockhart able to score 3 goals from their only forays forward the Power only led by 11 points at quarter time. The first 15 minutes of the second quarter was a real arm-wrestle with Lockhart scoring the only goal to draw within 5 points. But a yellow card to a Power player saw the rest of the team lift and with Captain Joel Rippingale kicking a goal followed by Doug Lavis and Corey Smith, enabling the Power to take a 24 point lead into half time. The third quarter started as another tight affair with no scoring in the first 10 minutes but with Smith ever so dangerous up forward with another two goals for the quarter and Matt Ross, who was playing a great game in the ruck slotted home a goal the Power was 44 points up. The defence led by Andrew Ollington, Sean Hanrahan, Blaize Naughtin and Shay Rhodes nearly held Lockhart scoreless for the quarter before a goal after the siren cut the lead the 38 points at the last change. The last quarter saw the Power totally dominated as they banged on 6 goals to only 2 points as they ran out 16.15 to 5.5 winners. Smith was dangerous all game finishing with 5 goals, while Doug Lavis was also on target with 4 goals. Luke Bryon did a great tagging role while Matt Robinson provided a great target at half forward.
The Reserves put in a much better display but still went down by 33 points. The boys defended very well making it very hard for Lockhart to score with Mal & Rhys Macartney and Luke Murphy leading the way. Veteran Paul Phibbs won plenty on the ball in the midfield while youngster Jordan Lavis showed plenty of promise up forward. John Wilkes and Sam Norman also gave their all but Lockhart was to good as they ran out 7.13 to 3.4 winners.
The Thirds had a big 161 point win over an under manned Lockhart side. Jack Wynne with 7 goals and Jordan Lavis with 4 goals both dominated up forward, while Jarrod Ballhouse, Madden Lohse and Jakeb Hanrahan won plenty of the ball in the mid field. Sean Marshall, Lochie Draby and Hayden Brockley also had days out for the Power as they held Lockhart scoreless with only bad kicking at goal costing a bigger win as the Power won 22.29 to no score.
The Fourths had a hard fought 21 points won over Lockhart. Lockhart was the first to score and they took a 5 point lead in to quarter time. Andrew Phibbs and Kane Mills lifted and along with Josh Tidd enabled the Power to take a 3 point lead into half time. Ryan Bruce was playing a great game and along with Cam Wilson enabled the Power to have a 2 point lead at the last change. Matt Walker dominated in the last quarter kicking two goals and fittingly Mills finished the game off with his second goal as the Power ran out 7.4 to 4.1 winners.
It was a great day for netball on Saturday when A Grade came up against Lockhart at home. The first quarter the side struggled to capitalise on strong efforts by the team’s defence. We were unable to penetrate the ball into our attack and convert it into goals which saw us down by 3 heading into the second quarter. We came out much stronger in the second with Sharni O'Donoghue playing an exceptional game in centre. We maintained our defensive pressure thorough out the rest of the game with Tam Lavis and Hollie O'Donoghue strong throughout the match. We made a few changes going into the fourth quarter seeing Sophie Hanrahan change ends with ease. Unfortunately Lockhart's strong core of players was too much for us on the day going down by 3 goals in the end.
The B Grade girls tackled a struggling Lockhart team on Saturday and came through with a solid win. A great first quarter from the girls set up the day as they skipped out to a 9 goal lead. Rosie Dye and Lauren Harders were both playing well in the ring and they were being well fed by Zoe O’Connell and Rikki Caruso. Lauren was fronting up after a big night but 2am salt and vinegar chips got her over the line. Grace Hanrahan had a great day in defence playing under an injury cloud and the ever reliable Megan Hanrahan also contributed solidly. It was also great to see Tess O’Donoghue continue her solid form. The final score of 49:37 was indicative of the game. Well done girls.
C Grade registered their second win for the season with a 26 goal victory over Lockhart. Youngsters Lucy Bartlett, Alicia Leahy and Hannah McDonald all stared for the Power as the girls finished with a good 42 to 16 win.
C Reserve went down in a thrilling contest by 2 goals. Sam Danswan, Nat Walker and Courtney Aitken all played well for the Power but it wasn’t quite enough as Lockhart finished on top with a 35 to 33 win..
Our Intermediates won their first game of the season defeating Lockhart by 23 goals. Both Ella and Grace Kingston played great games for the Power while Elly Brewster stood up for the Power as they ran out 49 to 26 winners.
Our young Junior side went down to Lockhart, 1 to 18. The defensive pressure by Lillian Walton, Brydee Lavis and Megan Aitken was really good. All the girls played really well individually and over the next few weeks hopefully they can bring it all together.
Last Saturday was Ladies Day at Coreen as the CDHBU social club recognised the hard work and contributions of our female supporters and sponsors with a day dedicated in their honor. Close to 100 ladies attended the marquee in a great show of support to Sarah Hanrahan, Peter Rippingale and Julie Talbot who organized the event. The positive feedback has been enormous and the club has every intention of making this an annual event. The club thanks to our waiters and other volunteers who made this day a massive success.
Next week we travel to Howlong in what will prove to be our biggest test. After the game we ask that as many players and supporters head back to Bundy’s Corowa Hotel for drinks and dinner.
Next Saturday night there will be a silent auction held at Bundy’s Corowa Hotel. The proceeds will benefit the club so we ask that as many people as possible attend.
100 club money is now is due so please see Darkie Collins if you are not yet financial.
Also a reminder for players to please begin selling their major raffle tickets and hand them back to Sarah Hanrahan.
