CDHBU Power has a hard fought day at Walla and were able to come away with 2 wins out of the 3 football games and 4 wins out of 7 games in the netball.
CDHBU Seniors won their first game since round 5 last season when they won a thrilling contest with Walla by 2 points. The Power seemed to have the game won leading by 35 points a minute before three quarter time, but a goal after the siren gave Hopper hope. And they hit the Power with everything in the last quarter and were able to hit the lead by 10 points with a couple of minutes to go. Sean Hanrahan became the hero with a long goal and then put the ball into the goal square were Aaron Ray took a big pack mark and kicked the goal to get the Power home by 2 points. Early in the game it was the Doug Lavis show as he kicked 4 goals in the first quarter to enable the Power to lead at quarter time 5.3 to 3.1. The second quarter was a slog for both sides with Power missing a few easy goals as Power went to half time leading 6.7 to 4.3. The third quarter saw the play open up and with Jarrod Hanrahan & Brad Talbot dominating in the mid field through George Neely effort’s in the ruck, debutant Damien Wilson having a fine match on his wing and Darren Damaso winning the ball in defence the Power were able to kick 7 goals for the quarter to lead 13.8 to 9.4 at the last change. Doug Lavis finished with 7 goals and Aaron Ray played a great game as the Power came away with the 2 point victory.
The Reserves were very poor in the game against Walla going down by 89 points, 19.9 to 5.4. The Power showed it could match them winning the third quarter but it was left to too few players on the day. Steve Talbot didn’t stop trying all day, Paul Phibbs was able to get away from his tagger to win plenty of the ball, while Ben Nixon, Ian Bock & Jordan Ray battle manfully in defence.
The Under 14’s kept their unbeaten start to season with a hard fought 13 point win against Walla. It was an even first quarter before the Power through Jacob Boyle, Andrew Phibbs and Kane Mills were able to get out to a 15 point lead at half time. It became a slog for the Power in the second half with youngsters Nick Kershaw & Jesse O’Donoghue doing enough for the Power to come away with a 4.9 to 3.2 victory.
The Under 17’s won by Forfeit.
A Grade netball was a fiercely contested match, both teams wanting the win. With a 1 goal the difference heading into the second half, Walla stepped up the pace and some unforced errors from the Power saw Walla take a 3 goal lead into the last quarter. Sally Smith was awesome in defence and was well supported by Hayley Kuschert and Brooke Schilg. Erin Lavis was excellent in attack and provided plenty of drive. The Power won the last quarter, but it was not enough to get the win going down 36 to 38.
B Grade had a close game against Walla, scores were 8 all at the first break. New goaling combination of Rosie Dye and Lauren Harders settled beautifully in the 2nd quarter to take a 3 goal lead. Bip Hanrahan controlled the midcourt and fed the goalers with some very classy passes. Walla fought back in the second half, but brilliant defence work from Tam Lavis held Walla off as B grade came away with well earnt win 32 to 31.
C Grade has kept their unbeaten start to the season intact with a 3 goal victory against Walla. Jordan Byron in centre court for the Power was great while Carly Murphy in defence enable CDHBU to come away with a 31 to 28 win and move into second spot of the ladder.
C Reserve lost their second close game for season going down by 3 goals to the Hoppers. Evie Barbour in centre court kept the Power in the contest and was will support by Jenna Lane in defence as the Power went down 26 to 29.
The Intermediates had a big 30 goal win to remain undefeated after their first 3 games. In an even team performance Sophie Hanrahan in goals and Chelsea Brindley in centre court were named the best players.
The Juniors girls lost their first game for the season going down by 5 goals to Walla. Claire Wilson in goals for the Power tried hard, along with Grace Martin in defence and Emma Wilson in centre court but it was enough as the Power went down 23 to 28.
The Mods started the day well for Power with a big victory. Chloe Gilcrist and Tiarna Smith played great games for the Power as the little girls won 28 to 1.
This week sees the Power play their first home game for the season against Billabong Crows at Coreen.
