The Seniors in front of a big crowd for the 1980, 1987 & 1991 Coreen Premiership sides had a great contest with Rand-Walbundrie before going down by 17 points. With local cancer victim Riley Anderson tossing the coin for the Call to Arms day, the Power lost the toss and had to kick into the breeze in the first quarter. The Tigers made good work with the breeze and were able to lead by 22 points at the first change 4.5 to 1.1. With again Brad Talbot and Jarrod Hanrahan winning plenty of ball in the midfield and with Clint Renner providing a target up forward the Power were able to kick 4 goals in the second quarter to trail by 19 points at the long break 7.8 to 5.1. In the third quarter, with wingman Aaron Ray and Tom Moloney getting involved and Brayden Kingston playing well in the middle the Power did all the attacking and when Michael Spiteri kicked his first goal the Power had hit the front by a point. But all the good work was undone in 10 minutes of football as the Tigers slotted through 5 goals to lead at the last change by 23 points, 12.9 to 9.4. Rand-Walbundrie were able to get the all important first goal in the last quarter but the Power fought on, with George Neely playing another good game in the ruck and with Talbot and Renner finishing with four goals each and Spiteri three the Power finished 17 points down at the final siren 16.11 to 14.6.
The Reserves went down by 55 points to Rand-Walbundrie. Up against the third placed Tigers, the Power gave them a good contest early with both sides finding it hard to kick a goal in first quarter with the Tigers leading 5 points to 2 points. Dustyn Nixon was having a good game at full back, while Steve Kerr continued his good form in the ruck as the Power trailed by 21 points at half time 3.7 to 4 points. Experienced heads Ian Bock, Paul Phibbs, Michael Keenes and Mark Tilders continued to battle hard after the long break along with Wade Thurling and Justin Robb but the Tigers were able to pull away in the second half winning 9.12 to 1.5.
The Under 17’s had an important 30 point victory against the previous 2nd placed Tigers. In a tight opening quarter in was the Tigers who went to the first break with a 3 point led, 1.0 to 0.3. In the second quarter with Michael Stephens, Kade Wilson and Marc Playford all getting on top for the Power, they boys were able to kick 3.5 to a point to have a good 3.8 to 1.1 lead. Sam Norman, Ben Wilson and Damien Wilson continued the good form of the side in the third quarter to increase the lead for the Power as they led 5.11 to 2.1 at the last change. Joe Ferguson and Luke Murphy won plenty of the ball as well for the Power as the side ran out winners 5.14 to 2.2.
The Under 14’s started the day off with a comfortable 71 point victory. In the first quarter the boys didn’t have their kicking boots on as they kicked 1.5 for the quarter. With Jack Wynne, Jay O’Donoghue and Jordan Lavis winning plenty of the ball the Power were able to go to half time leading 6.7 to no score. Younger players Jesse O’Donoghue, Corey Walton and Matthew Walker all played well as the Power as able to hold Rand-Walbundrie scoreless as the Power finished at 10.11.
Netball
In A grade the Power were slow to react to Rand – Walbundrie’s pace in the first half this week. The Tigers moved the ball quickly into their goal circle and forced Power to move Julie Lavis into GK to stop the flow. Tam Lavis had another outstanding game in GD, creating turnovers at crucial times in the game. Power was down 12 goals at the main break and needed to fight back if we were to stay in the game. Power produced one of their best quarters of netball in the third quarter, Power out scored Tigers by 9 goals to be within 3 goals. The last quarter was a nail biter, the scores were level for most of the quarter. Tigers started to gain the ascendancy, and with a little luck, they turned the game in their favour winning 57 to 50.
In B grade Power took the court this week with a new look to the team, injuries to key players meant changes to the team. Tess Wilson and Sophie Hanrahan came up from intermediates and settled in beautifully. Under the guidance of Lou Clohessy, Tess and Sophie kept Power's goals flowing. Grace Hanrahan dominated in centre, taking turnovers and creating drive into attack. Meghan Hanrahan was fantastic in GD, and along Cindy Charlton they denied Tigers scoring opportunities. Power controlled the game from start to finish, and went on to have a comfortable win, 47 to 25. Thank you to Tess & Sophie, great effort girls!
C Grade returned to the winners list with 32 goal victory against the Tigers. The Power girls got away to a strong start, shutting the Tigers down in the first quarter. Bec Longmire was shooting well for the Power and Sue Wynne having a good game in centre court. The Power was able to hold the ascendency throughout the game and the girls were able to come away with a 48 to 16 victory and kept their finals hopes alive.
C Reserve had a resounding 18 goal victory against Rand-Walbundrie. With Lana Rhodes playing well in centre court, she was able to provide plenty of drive through the mid court and pass accurately into the shooters. Emily Bush was once again on fire with her shooting for the Power. Casey Webb continued her consistent season for the Power, and after dominating in defence was swung into the goal shooting end where she took to shooting goals like a duck takes to water! The challenge now is for her coach to decide which end of the court to play her! The Power was able to run out winners 39 to 21.
The Intermediates kept their spot in the top two with a 22 goal win against the Tigers. The Power were a little sloppy in the first quarter but were able to come out after the first break and play better netball to steam away from the Tigers. With Rachel Hanrahan staring for the Power in centre court she was able to find plenty of space and make it difficult for her opponents. Hannah McDonald was able to make the goal circle her own, getting plenty of possessions and shooting truly. The Power was able to have a good 47 to 25 victory.
The juniors had their toughest game of the year against Rand – Walbundrie Tigers before coming away victors by 3 goals. Claire Wilson and Brooke Wilson performed strongly in attack, giving the girls what was to be the biggest margin at quarter time. Lucy Bartlett once again played well in defences along with Sarah Chandler. Full credit to the team to come away with a 28 – 25 win in a very exciting game of junior netball.
The Mods had an 11 goal win against the Tigers. It was a great game by all the girls, they are showing improvement in skills and teamwork each week. NIkta Bainbridge had a great game in attack, centre court & defence for the Power and along with Tiarna Smith enabled the Power to win 13 goals to 2.
This week’s sees the Power take on Holbrook at Coreen.
