The Power’s season came to end after they went down by 15 points to Osborne at Walbundrie in their Elimination final.
With Doug Lavis celebrating his 300th game, it was Lavis that was first on the board for the Power with a trademark lead and mark and when Jeremy Stevenson slotted home a great goal on his left the Power were two goals up. Osborne then hit back with 3 goals in a row before Lavis kicked his second. The Power then lost Luke Bryon to a serious knee injury but when Joel Rippingale slotted home a major the Power was able to take a 5 point lead into quarter time. The second quarter saw the Power have the ball in their forward line but couldn’t put the score on the board. Corey Smith kicked a special goal but it was the only one the Power could kick for the quarter as the Power kicked an inaccurate 1.6 for the quarter to trail by 5 points at half time. Osborne kicked the first goal after half time, but when Josh Lewis kicked a goal the Power was back within 4 points. Matt Robinson was giving her all in the ruck, and Sam Burdon was well on top down back. Youngster Jay O’Donoghue was providing plenty of run and good ball use while Jarrod Hanrahan was winding back the clock with a vintage display in the centre as the Power was still in the contest, but Osborne started to take control with three goals in a row before a late Smith goal had the Power behind by 19 points at the last change. Osborne got the vital first goal but the Power hit straight back with Andrew Ollington playing well to hit the scoreboard. A vital miss 10 minutes into the last quarter could have saw the Power get within 13 points but Osborne raced it down the other end to break the Power’s hearts and they were able to get the margin out to 33 points. But the Power was not going to give in and came home with a rush with Ollington kicking 2 goals and when Matt Ross slotted home another the Power was within 15 points. But Osborne slowed down the play and when the siren sounded it ended the Power’s season as the Power went down 15.15 to 13.12. Well done to Brad Talbot and the boys, which have made a big improvement from last year and pushed all sides this season.
The Under 17’s season also came to an end when they went down by 19 points to Rand Walbundrie on Sunday. The Power were quick out of the blocks and with Bill Hansen on fire and Tim Gilchrist staring the Power made all the early running as they kicked 4 of the first five goals with Gilchrist slotting home 3 as the Power took a 21 point lead into quarter time. The tigers kicked the first goals in the second quarter, but with Tim Heagney playing well in the ruck the Power hit back kicking 3 goals in 2 minutes to take a 29 point lead. But then the Tigers clicked into gear banging on the last three goals of the quarter as the Power only led by 12 points at half time. Jakob Hanrahan was playing well at half back, best & fairest winner Jordan Lavis was damaging and Sean Marshall was giving his all but the Tigers kept on coming kicking three goals to one and the Power only led by 2 points at the last change. The Tigers hit the lead with an early goal but when Gilchrist slotted home his fourth for the day the scores were level with 8 minutes left. But it was the Tigers that finished full of running as they kicked the last 3 goals as they ran out 13.10 to 10.9 winners. Well done Peter Rippingale and his boys on a very good season.
The B graders season ended when it went down to Henty in the first elimination final on Saturday at Walbundrie. The girls took to the court in a positive fashion, not letting nerves get to them this year. They started off in their usual brilliant style with lots of defensive pressure and beautiful drive down the court. At quarter time, only 2 goals down, they again took to the court with plenty of confidence. However, hot conditions and silly mistakes saw Henty take the lead by 7 at half time which continued to blow out throughout the game, even with the inclusion of fresh legs. The girls continued fighting and working tirelessly but unfortunately went down 53 to 33, however the B grade girls should be very proud of their efforts on Saturday and throughout the year. They have proven to themselves that they are finals worthy, and with this extra confidence next year will see them go even further. Well done for a great season girls.
The Intermediates late season form continued when they eliminated the 3rd place Rand Walbundrie in their knockout final. The girls started off a bit slow in their final on Saturday but it didn't take them long to warm up and play like they normally do. They were down by 3 at half time and the girls went on to the court with a 'nothing to lose' attitude. They came off after the 3rd quarter in front by 3 and never gave up for the rest of the game taking the game out 53-41. It was a day for the Kingston's and Wilson's with Grace and Ella Kingston standing out in defence and mid court respectively and Emma Wilson controlling the game throughout and feeding the ball in beautifully to our shooters. Congratulations to Brooke Wilson who received Best on Court by the umpires for the game. All the girls played an amazing game of netball that was of great standard. We look forward to taking on Culcairn on Sunday at 11am. Hope to see the supporters out there too because your support on Saturday was fantastic and helped us get across the line.
This weekend sees the Under 14’s take on Henty at 8.45am on Saturday and the Intermediates play on Sunday at 11.00am. So get out to Walbundrie to support our future stars of the club.
