Saints too strong for the Power.
Power went down to second placed Brock-Burrum by 38 points in the wet at Coreen.
Power started well but bad kicking for goal cost the Power as the Saints took a 2 points lead into quarter time with the Power trailing 1.4 to 2.0. Josh Lewis was relishing the wet conditions and along with Joel Rippingale winning plenty the ball the Power held a six point lead half way through the second quarter, 3.6 to 3.0. But the Saints started to get on top and were able to make the Power pay with straight kicking at they took a 13 point lead into half time. The backline lead by Shay Rhodes, Sean Hanrahan, Andew Ollington and Shayne Mathews battled hard but with a couple of injuries to forward line players the Saints moved away with the game as they extended the lead to 20 points by the last change. The Power was founding really hard to hit the scoreboard as the Saints ran out the game well to win 10.5 to 3.9.
The reserves also went down by 38 points in their clash with Brock Burrum. The side battle hard in the wet conditions with Wes Amor showing his strength, while youngsters Rhys Macartney, Nathan Allan and Mal Macartney all won plenty of the ball. Kyle McKenizie was able to snag a goal to get the Power on the board this week as the side went down 6.9 to 1.1.
The thirds returned to the winners list with a big 76 point win over Brock Burrum. Jakob Hanrahan lead the way with a very good performance and along with Madden Lohse control the ball all day. Jay O’Donoghue made a welcome return after State trails, to show his class. While Lachlan Darby and Kurt Letchford thrived in the wet conditions as they held the Saints to only 2 points as they ran out 11.12 to 0.2 winners .
The Fourths remain unbeaten after accounting for Brock Burrum by 59 points. With main players in Kane Mills, Andrew Phibbs and Cameron Wilson having great games the Power was in control from the first bounce. Matt Walker provide a great target up forward in the wet conditions to kick 4 goals, while Jimmy Hanrahan, Taylor Baker and Jordan Renner were all good for the Power. Harley Ralph and Tom Webb also stood out as the Power won 10.6 to 1.1.
On a bleak day in pouring rain CDHBU A grade took on the fourth placed Brock-Burrum. Again, a loss would see them lose touch with the six so the pressure was on. Early going was hard as both teams adjusted to the slippery ball and wet courts. 7-7 at quarter time reflected the struggle.
A great second quarter by the girls opened the game up however. The back three of Holly O’Donoghue, Jodie Lewis and Tamara Lavis played out of their skins and Sophie Hanrahan and Bec Barber were capitalising on the many turnovers created through mid court. As the rain came in heavier during the second half, the Power’s ascendancy continued all over the court with the final score of 48-37 reflective of the sustained effort. Again Sophie Hanrahan’s shooting was outstanding and Holly O’Donoghue’s game at GK deserves special mention. Great effort girls.
Power’s B Grade continued their great season as they overpowered near neighbours Brock-Burrum. All the girls came switched on in the rain and early play saw them bang on a swag of goals and go out to a match winning lead. The mid court rotations of Rikki Caruso, Bip Hanrahan, Zoe O’Connell and Hayley Scott were supplying Lauren Harders and Rosie Dye in great style. Tess O’Donoghue, Meghan Hanrahan and Karina “more comebacks than John Farnham” Collins defended fantastically. Coach Lavis even had the arrogance to drag Rosie Dye for the last quarter as they strolled home for well deserved 42-30 win. The win now sees them sitting in 6th position.
C Grade went down by 18 goals in their clash against Brock-Burrum. Alicia Leahy and Emily Bush gave their all for the Power, while Karina Parr played well but the Saints were too strong run out 41 to 23 winners.
C Reserve put up a brave effort only to lose by 2 goals to the top of the ladder Brock-Burrum. Anna Dye, Natalie Walker and Jo Nichol took the game up to the undefeated Saints but when the final whistle blew the girls were behind 24 to 26.
The Intermediates suffered a 18 goal loss to the Saints. Ella Kingston was everywhere for the Power, while Emily Boyle & Elise Norman gave their all, but the Saints were to good run out 39 to 21 winners.
The Juniors had a hard task this week with the rain and playing a good side and took a little while to adjust. The defence of Alyce Hince, Chloe Gilcrist and Brydee Lavis was good as per usual, but the girls couldn’t capitalize in attack as they went down 24 to 0. This week Rikki Caruso takes over as coach which all the girls are all excited about, as current coach Grace Hanrahan heads overseas.
This week we take on Osborne at Osborne in a must win game for the Seniors. Osborne has invited the CDHBU Football & Netball Club to stay after the game for a meal, bonfire and fireworks.
