CDHBU have won a thrilling elimination final against Howlong by 8 points at Walbundrie which sets up a replay of last season epic Semi Final against Jindera this Sunday.
The Power was slow out of the blocks with Howlong having all the play but luckily for the Power it took the Spiders 5 attempts before they could register their first goal. Damien Payne got the Power on the score board with a goal but Howlong was able to kick the next 2 goals before Payne kicked his second before a goal on the siren to Howlong enabled the Spiders to take a 17 point lead into quarter time 4.6 to 2.1.
The second quarter saw the Power come out firing with Josh Lewis playing well in the centre, the Power got on a roll and kicked goals to Hayden Fischer and Brad Talbot. And when Adam Houlihan snagged 2 quick goals the Power was suddenly up by 6 points 15 minutes into the quarter. But the Power stopped and Howlong got on a roll and kicked the next 3 goals to take a 15 point lead into half time 7.10 to 6.1.
Coach Payne asked for a big improvement at half time, and made some changes with Mat Walker going into the ruck. But Howlong got first blood in the third quarter with a quick goal. But the Power hit back with 3 goals in 5 minutes to only trail by 2 points. Howlong were able to get the next goal to take the margin back out to 8 points before the Power got on a roll again. Goals to Jeremy Stevenson, Alex Wallis, Payne & Houlihan got the Power in front and when Stevenson kicked another just before three quarter time, their 8th goal for the quarter, the Power was able to take a 19 point lead into the last quarter 14.2 to 9.13.
The Spiders got an early goal in the last before Coach Payne’s 5th goal got the margin back out to 19 points. But now it was Howlong’s turn to get on a roll and kicked the next 4 goals to have a 6 point lead at the 20 minute mark of the last quarter. A 40m set shot goal by Payne regained the lead for the Power with 2 minutes remaining. The Power won the centre clearance and held the ball in the forward line before Payne held onto a good contested mark on the siren. Payne kicked his 7th for the day has the Power ran out 17.6.108 to 14.16.100 winners.
Payne was great for the Power with his 7 goals, while Lewis was great in the clinches for the Power. Alex Wallis presented well at centre half forward while Andrew Ollington did a great job in defence and along with Matt Howard.
A strong start in the Reserves between the Power and the Magpies with both teams hard at the ball, but it was the Power that got the upper hand to lead by 8 points at quarter time.
The second quarter saw Sean Hanrahan and Jordan Wilson taking control though the centre of the ground along with Mal Macartney and Ryan Mills giving the Power forward plenty of opportunities with Brad Lewis kicking 3 and Doug Lavis 2 first half goals the Power started to take control leading by 37 points at half time.
The Magpies came in the third quarter kicking the first 3 goals, the challenge was on for the Power and they hit back hard with goals from Doug Lavis, Ryan Rhodes along with Tom Renshaw it was a quick reply giving the Power a good lead at three quarter time
The last quarter it was all the Power in a dominant display the Power slammed on 10 goals with Tyson Burdon snapping 2 goals and along some good goals from Mark Playford, Mal Macartney, and Damian Talbot giving them a massive 100 point win, 22.12.144 to 7.2.44.
In the Under 17’s the young Power got off to fast in the elimination final against Osborne kicking 3 goals in the first quarter keeping Osborne to only 2 points. Then a tight second saw both teams 2 goals each giving the Power a solid 15 point lead go into the main break will Jim Hanrahan, Cam Wilson and Andrew Phibbs all playing great games.
The third quarter saw Osborne kick 4 goals keeping the Power to only 1 goal giving Osborne a 4 points lead at three quarter time.
In a great last quarter it was a goal for goal tussle with the Power giving everything they had, with Tom Hynes 3 goals for the match, and also Cam Wilson 2 Steve Cordwell 2 goals each, some good efforts from Josh Tidd and Will Johnson , but unfortunately for the Power they went down by 4 points, 9.9.63 to 9.5.59. Well done to Sean Hanrahan and his players on a great season.
