A huge crowd saw the CDHBU Power retain its position atop the Hume League ladder with a convincing 93 point victory over old Coreen League rivals, the Billabong Crows.
The Power was quick out of the blocks with goals to Alex Wallis, Corey Smith and Joel Rippingale in the first 4 minutes to open a good lead. Crows fight back with two goals before a Brad Talbot goal near the end of the quarter enabled the Power to take a 13 point lead into quarter time.
In the second quarter Crows gun Brent Arnho kicked 2 goals to have four goals to bring the Crows back into the contest but with Brad Talbot, Jeremy Stevenson and Shayne Mathews winning plenty of the ball, Powers forwards were able to capitalize as they took a 31 point lead into half time.
After half time the Power defence did all they could to assist Matt Ross with some great team defence that seen the influence of the Crows key forwards curtailed. The backline led by Andrew Ollington, Sean Hanrahan and Blazie Naughton only allowed 7 goals for the game as Hamish Payne, Tyson Burdon and Alex Wallis supplied the forwards with Corey Smith (5 goals) and Jeremy Stevenson (5 goals) the benefactors. The Power booted 12 second half goals to complete the victory in what was perhaps their first complete performance of the year as they ran out 21.14 to 7.5 winners.
The reserves recorded their first victory of the season with a narrow 9 point victory. The reserves once again started well with the first three goals of the game with Luke Melville and Clint Renner dominant up forward. The Power continue to grow the lead in the second quarter with Jordan Thornton, first game Kyle McKenzie, Nathan Allan and Jake Kruen leading the way as the Power by 27 points at half time. The Crows stormed back into the contest in third quarter as they only trailed by 3 points at the last change. The Crows kicked the first goal of the last quarter to take the lead, but goals to youngsters Alex Dickinson and Jack Norman enabled the Power to win 9.7 to 8.4. Wes Amor led a solid defence and Nick Nagle, Mal McCartney, Jeremy Boothman and Joel Willett controlled to mid field.
The thirds remain unbeaten after defeating the Billabong Crows by 64 points. Jack Wynne led the way up forward with 7 goals while Luke Brown was creative with 3 goals as well. Jay O’Donoghue marked his return from a serious knee with a best on ground performance while Jarrod Ballhouse provided great run from the back line. Keb Hanlon and Corey Walton were prominent as the thirds managed to win each quarter and with Brad McCartney and Hayden Brockley firing showed their supporters that they are developing into a handy team under coach Peter Rippingale as they ran out 12.11 to 3.1 winners.
The fourths started the day off in grand style by beating their previously undefeated opponents in high quality game of underage football. The final 18 point margin was achieved in no small way through the contributions of Kane Mills, Will Johnston and Cam Wilson. Matty Walker had his usual solid game and was well assisted by Ryan Bruce. In a tense game where the scores were close for all but the final moments, Adrian Darby and Jimmy Hanrahan ensured the Power boys are still to be beaten as they ran out 6.8 to 3.8 winners
CDHBU had a good day at the office on Saturday with emphatic wins in both A and B grade. A grade wore down a determined Billabong Crows team with some good mid court play and strong shooting from Julie Lavis, Bec Barber and Sophie Hanrahan in the second half. Holly O'Donoghue defended like a gun all day and Jodie Lewis' great to the season continued in WD. Rickki Caruso also played well in her first game up in A grade. The final score line of 46 to 32 was reflective of the game and a big challenge awaits the girls in the shape of Jindera next week.
The B grade game was a more lop sided affair with the height of Rosie Dye and Lauren Harders up front causing the crows all sorts of problems. Karly Murphy's great season continued also but mid courter Hayley Scott was best on ground with a great display of running and determination in centre. The final score was 63 - 27.
C Grade had a hard fought 5 goal victory over the Crows. Hannah McDonald, Brooke Freyer and Rachel Hanrahan all played well as the Power ran out 28 to 23 winners.
With the C Reserve still on a high after a close game against Murray Magpies the girls were keen to continue their good form against an unknown Billabong Crows team. The girls got off to a flying start with Sam Danswan & Jo Nichol continually finding space in the goal circle. Anna Dye & Lauren Playford played well again at the defensive end and with Courtney Aitken taken numerous intercepts in wind defence, the power girls proved too strong for the crows players. After a spirited talk from their captain Lauren, the entire team moved up a gear to totally outclass their opponents. Our defensive efforts saw the Crows team only score 6 goals for the entire match, while the power girls scored a huge 52 goals. If there were 8 awards to be given out for the game, each of the players would have received one as they all played extremely well.
Our young Junior side improvement continued with coach Grace Hanrahan proud of them all as they went down 8 to 40. Lily Hanrahan was a star shooter with Maja Ross’s beautiful passing. Julia Delany did a great job defending while the other girls all pulled together and are standing to be a real team.
CDHBU would to thank all those who made the day a great event for the Bush Family and our past players.
Next week sees the Power head to Jindera in what will be the toughest test yet for all grades. After the game on Saturday players and supporters are heading to Kinross Woolshed for dinner.
