CDHBU Power has continued their strong start to the Hume League season with a polished 69 point victory over the Murray Magpies at Lavington.
Although the Power entered the match minus 4 automatic selections they extended their lead at each break in a sometimes spiteful encounter.
The backline, led by Blaize Naughtin and Shay Rhodes, held strong all day in only allowing 4 goals for the match and have so far only conceded 7 goals for the season.
Josh Lewis helped control the midfield early when the Power took a handy quarter time lead against a stiff breeze.
Young guns Tom Moloney and Alex Wallis were prominent all day, and along with Jeremy Stevenson they racked up plenty of telling possessions.
Coach Brad Talbot who led from the front all day, was pleased with his charges at half time when they had a six goal buffer.
The third quarter proved to be the Powers best as they further extended their lead to a match winning one.
The final term was somewhat of a slog and the boys are to be commended for maintaining their focus upon the football.
The Reserves had a disappointing loss after once again starting strongly with three early goals. Clint Renner seemed to have the forward to himself and was well served with good delivery from on ballers Paul Phibbs and Jeremy Boothman.
However, it was left to too few during the second and third quarters as the Magpies leg speed began to dominate.
Nathan Allen busted his gut all game in the ruck and Andrew Ollington dominated down back. Despite a late last quarter charge the Power came up short by 10 points.
The reserves are still gelling as a unit and have shown glimpse of what they are capable of. 15 minutes of football was almost enough to steal the game and when this is turned into 80 minutes the reserves will start to gather some victories.
The Thirds remain unbeaten after a come from behind victory. Kicking against the wind the boys were slow out of the blocks as the Magpies kicked the first five goals to lead by 31 points at quarter time.
The boys chipped away in the second quarter to trail by 9 points at half time. With Jordan Lavis playing a very good game, and Matthew Baker and Tim Gilchrist providing an avenue to goal the boys closed the gap to just 2 points by the last change.
With coach ‘Fog’ and assistant coach ‘Whale’ barking instruction in the last quarter that could be heard in Wodonga the boys lifted with Brad Macartney, Jack Wynne, Jarrod Ballhause, James Webb and Jakob Hanrahan all prominent as the boys finished the game 2 points in front.
The Fourths continued their unbeaten start to season with a big win over the Magpies. The boys took a 14 point lead at quarter time but it was the second quarter were they took the game away from the Magpies with Cameron Wilson very dangerous up forward and with Kane Mills and Andrew Phibbs winning plenty of the ball the boys led by 52 points at half time.
The boys extend the lead in the second half with Joel Costeralla, Matthew Walker, Matthew Bush and Matthew McDonald all having good games and with Wilson kicking four goals the boys finished with an 87 point victory.
The Power netballers made the trek to Lavington Sportsground on Saturday fresh from close wins against Walla a fortnight ago. Magpies are a perennial powerhouse in Hume league netball with their A Grade premiers last year, so a tough battle was to be expected.
B Grade started out like a house on fire and skipped out to an early lead of 8 at one stage to have the Magpies on the hop.
Rosie Dye was playing well in the ring and she was being fed very well by Lauren Harders and Ricki Caruso.
The Maggies responded by substituting most of their A Grade team onto the court and the tide began to turn.
Turnovers plagued the girls in the middle phases of the game as the blustery conditions played a part also.
Ricki Caruso moved into GA and Jodie Lewis was dominating in mid court as the Power managed to keep in touch. The latter stages were very tight but the experience of the Magpies was telling as the managed to hold on 43 to 39.
Despite the loss it was very pleasing to see the girls battle away against the highly rated opposition. Confidence and belief in their ability to win against teams like this will come with time and effort.
The A Grade game and result followed a very similar storyline to B grade. Both teams were “underwomaned”, with the Maggies missing two shooters and the Power missing young guns Brooke Schilg and Sophie Hanrahan.
Four very tight quarters ensued against the reining premiers. Turnovers were again the name of the game as some great opportunities to really give it to the maggies were lost.
The undersized defence of Tam Lavis, Holly O’Donoghue and Grace Hanrahan battled manfully.
The mid courters ran all day and Jules Lavis played another great game up front to put the girls within two goals with minutes to go.
Again, experience told as the Magpies steadied to win 32 to 27.
The low scoring reflected the wind and an inordinate amount of umpiring but overall it was a good effort by all the girls.
C Grade went down by 26 goals in their clash with the Magpies. Rachel Hanrahan and Alicia Leahy played well for the Power but the Magpies were too strong as they ran out 46 to 20 winners.
C Reserve had a thrilling draw against the Magpies. Lauren Playford and Anna Dye were stars for the Power as the game went down to the wire as both teams finished on 32 goals each.
The intermediates started off strong working together and backing each other to lead by 5 in the first quarter break.
Murray came out fighting in the second quarter to take the lead at half time. Grace Kingston went into GK to add a bit of height in the ring and did her job wonderfully. Her intercepts and rebounds were clean which shut down the Murray shooters but just not enough.
Brooke Wilson showed her form in the goals shooting at 68% but getting almost every rebound of the goals she missed. She was helped by the little Ella Kingston who played wonderfully in WA by feeding the ball in nicely to the goalies and backing up the defenders as they brought the ball down.
The girls ended up going down 46-58 but it was a great game to watch. They are looking forward to a week off as Billabong Crows don't have a side and will be ready to hit the court hard against Jindera.
Our young Junior side went down to a much big opposition. Youngsters Jade Lane, Lily Hanrahan and Brydee Lavis all tried hard but the Magpies were just too strong run out 36 to 0 winners.
This week sees the Power take on arch rival, the Billabong Crows. The two former Coreen League members always put on tough, close matches and this week will be different.
It is also a special day for the Power as the game will be played in honour of Andrew Bush. Monies raised by raffles, merchandise and breakfast sales will be donated to the Epilepsy Foundation. Purple socks must be worn by our footballers and these can be purchased from Emily Bush.
It is also a day where we welcome back our past players to the club. Memorabilia will be on display as will many tales, both embellished and otherwise. Contact Shane Norman for details.
