Damien Wilson represented NSW at the National Under 15 titles in Canberra last month along with Isaac Muller from Henty and Daniel Lieschke from Rand Walbundrie Tigers.
Australian Football Championship 23-30th July 2011 in Canberra
Damien, Isaac and Daniel attended a 3 day training camp held at St Gregory’s, Campbelltown in the July School holidays before the Australian National Football Carnival.
Damien and Isaac were selected in the 5 man leadership group. Damien captained the NSW side in the match against WA 1; Isaac was captain against the ACT. Damien played on ball, Isaac was in the ruck and Daniel was in the back line.
There were teams from QLD, ACT, NT, 2 from WA, 2 from VIC, and NSW. The NSW Blue Dogs were coached by Shaun Brooker, they won 3 from 5 games. The NSW side finished 5th overall only losing to Vic Country and WA 1.
Damien received 3 awards out of the 5 games played and was awarded NSW 15 years & under Best and Fairest player for the carnival. Isaac also was named as one of the best players, and Daniel received an award against the ACT.
All three boys thoroughly enjoyed their experience representing NSW; they met many new people and played with and against some very talented boys.
Isaac Muller (Henty) attended AFL trails in Albury on April 28th 2011, representing Billabong High School, and was selected in the Riverina Murray under 15’s team to play in the Combined High Schools NSW State Team Trails in Sydney in June. The Riverina Murray side was coached by Tim Sanson.
Isaac was also a member of the GWS under 15’s Academy Team in 2011. He attended Academy trials in Canberra in February and was one of 47 selected from around 300 boys. Academy members trained at local venues during the 2011 season with Isaac attending weekly training in Albury under coach Daniel Maher.
Isaac attended a 3 day GWS camp in Sydney in March and was chosen in the Under 15’s GWS Academy team that played at the AFL NSW/ACT Joss under 16’s State Zone Trails at Riverview in April. Coaches of this team were Paul Kelly, Michael Cousins & Mark Armstrong.
Damien Wilson (CDHBU) like Isaac Muller attended selection trials in Albury, representing Corowa High School and was selected as captain of the Riverina Murray under 15’s side at the Combined High School NSW state trials in Sydney in June 2011, under the guidance of Tim Sanson. Although the carnival was marred by wet weather, they finally played 4 games and Damien was named Riverina Murray Best & Fairest player for the carnival.
Over the past years Damien has represented Riverina in grade 5 & 6 and was selected to play in the 12 years and under 2008 National championship held in Melbourne. He has also played in the Under 13 and Under 14 NSW/ACT Joss Talented Players program in 2009 & 2010. Over the last 2 years Damien has been participating in the GWS Academy in Albury with Isaac Muller and this year gained selection in the 2011 GWS under 15 side, to play in Sydney Under 16 Talented Players program in the April school holidays. Unfortunately Damien was not able to participate in this carnival due to conflict in his selection to play for the Ovens & Murray in the 2011 V/Line Cup held in Melbourne. The Under 15 Ovens & Murray side had a great carnival, playing off in the Grand final against Geelong, but unfortunately where defeated narrowly by 6 points.
After being awarded Hume League Best and Fairest 4ths Player for 2010, Damien continues to play for CDHBU 3rds as an on ball player and this year he played his first senior game for CDHBU at aged 14, against Walla and was recently awarded the NAB Rising Star for Round 17 against Walla.
Daniel Lieschke (Rand Walbundrie Tigers) was selected to play in the Ovens and Murray U15 Bushrangers schoolboy side, coached by Mark Knobel, which competed in the V/Line cup in Melbourne in the Easter holidays. Daniel tried out for the side in December 2010 and had been training for a position in the team each week since the beginning of the school year. Over 100 boys tried out for this side from the Albury/Wodonga-Wangaratta area.
Daniel attended trails in Wagga, representing St Paul’s College Walla, and from there was then selected in the CCC-CIS South 15 & under team (from all the Catholic and Independent schools in southern NSW) and played in the state championships in Sydney in June, this team was coached by Mark Sanson. These championships also had a CCC-CIS North team as well as 6 combined state high school teams.
At these championships, players had an opportunity for selection for the NSW All Schools team to play in Canberra at the National Championships at the end of July. Of the 176 boys that attended the state championships 25 were chosen to represent NSW, Daniel, Damien and Isaac were three of these boys.
