The Tradelink Western Magpies Reserves topped of a very good season at the Grogan Medal Count on Monday night despite their exit from the Finals at the hands of Morningside on Saturday. Nippy small forward and midfielder Kale Reed took out the Velocity Sports Cup Reserves Best and Fairest Award the Bill Clerke Medal with 15 votes and shared the honour with Christopher Graham from Labrador. Matt Thompson in an amazing effort won the Velocity Sports Reserves Goal Kicking Award with 33 goals in only 10 games following missing games with senior representation, a mid season trip to Europe for the Ashes and missing the last game and the better part of the penaltimate game with a knee injury.
Cubby and Clock were both very surprised with their awards and Cubby was clearly surprised by his win, both thanked their Coaches and team mates in their acceptance speeches on the night. Reid Dobson also polled very well with the umpires and finished up outright second in the count with 11 votes. Other vote getters are as follows - Peter Kilroy 6, Matt Thompson, Jye Spencer and Brett McEvoy 3, William Fozard, Scott Matthews, Blake McClennan and Dom Beer 2, Ian Carroll, Tom Power, Jack Parkes, Greg Friis and Gabe McKinnon 1.
The other big performer for the Tradelink Western Magpies on the night was youngster Jackson Allen who confirmed it is not just the Western Magpies who rate the youngster highly as he finished fifth in the NAB Rising Star Award polling 22 votes after playing just 4 games for the season. The award was won by Redlands James Charlesworth with 43 votes and the remainder of the top 5 was Troy Taylor NT (35), Brad Palipuaminni NT (28) and Justin Myers Redland (25). Meanwhile the Western Magpies other nomination for the Rising Star Ben Heffernan-Roper finished in 12th spot with 5 votes but is the favourite for the clubs Best and Fairest.
The Western Magpies in a winless season did not feature strongly in the Grogan Medal Count but this is how Magpies players polled on the night - Val Pope and Chris Judson 2, Josh Barton, Tim McEvoy and Richard Wenham 1.
