This Sunday 2pm @ Coorparoo the BGM Images Western Magpies U/18 Team will take on the Morningside Panthers for the Sports Ready U/18 Premiership Cup. Following a solid 13 point win over Mt Gravatt at Zilmeare last Sunday the young Magpies will looking to turn the tables on Morningside who defeated them by 48 points in the Second Semi Final at Morningside two weeks ago.
Morningside have beaten the Magpies on both occasions the teams have met in 2009 with Morningside winning their other meeting in 5 by 25 points and will go in favorites but the young Magpies are by no means out of the contest. The teams will meet for the first time on neutral turf at Coorparoo which should give the Magpies a positive to build on and along with the knowlege their performance in the Seccond Semi Final was below par they are more than capable of winning this game and the title.
Connor Sengstock has been in great form during the finals and his ability to get over the top of the Siders tall rucking department as he did two weeks ago will be important as will his support from Matt Mitchell and Andrew McConnell. The real area of improvement that the Magpies will need to make is when the ball hits the ground at the clearances which is where Morningside hurt them last time around often scoring quickly from centre clearances. The Magpies midfield group will need to not only stop Morningsides easy clearances but will need to generate some quality Centre breaks of their own.
The strong midfield group of Stuart Wenham, Chrs McClennan, Alex Kitching, Jimmy Scarce, Daniel Hope, James Collins, Tom Baldwin and Allan Borchardt will need to work hard and be desperate in appyling physical pressure to the Morningside midfield who can cause alot of damage if left unchallenged. dont be surprised if the Magpies inject some bigger bodies through the midfield at different times to help achieve this.
The Magpies backline lead by Chris Hunt, Cmeron Mitchell-Hill and Jesse Hemple and well supported by Bryce Crossley, Jordan Patterson, Paul Hardess, Cory Colhoun,Steve Friis and Mitchell Oates can beat their opponents and provide valuable rebound going forward providing the midfield gets its job done in restricting the the time and space on the Siders delivery inside 50.
The forward line will need to make the absolute most of its opportunities and will rely on the ball being delivered quickly, deep and direct by the Magpies midfield and half back line. Given that opportunity Jake Knight, Alex Dickfos, Kurt Sengstock, Bernard Seir and Nick Reed can kick the goals required to get the young magpies to glory.
Good Luck Boys!!!
