EAGLEHAWK celebrated yet another Bendigo Youth Girls’ Football League premiership in Sunday’s clash with Marong.
The Two Blues fought on to score a 15-point victory against the Panthers at North Bendigo’s Atkins Street ground.
The grand final victory capped another superb season for the Tracie Wiesinger-coached Hawks.
Eaglehawk’s run to the finals included 10 wins in the home-and-away series.
Eaglehawk’s sole defeat was on Marong’s turf at Malone Park in round two by 11 points.
The grand finalists drew the round 11 clash at Eaglehawk’s Canterbury Park.
The
Darren Turnbull-coached Marong had nine wins, two losses and a draw
leading into the finals. The Two Blues were favourites to win in their
third consecutive grand final appearance, although Marong had won last
year’s decider.
“Marong put us under a lot of pressure,’’ Wiesinger said.
“Their tackling and one per cent plays was of a great standard.’’
Defences were in control for a lot of the match.
“There were a lot of stoppages, a lot of tackles, and many exciting passages of play.’’
Team manager at Eaglehawk the previous two years, Wiesinger took on coaching the girls’ football team for the first time.
“To win the premiership was a terrific achievement.
“A lot of our team have played the past two years together, and we have
six who played their final game in the youth league (under-18), but,
hopefully, will be able to play on with a senior team next year.’’
Eaglehawk also had several newcomers who had never played in finals.
“Our senior players did a terrific job, not just in helping them in the
lead-up to the finals, but right throughout the season,’’ Wiesinger
said.
