For the third season in a row the Goannas will feature in finals football with our Division 2 boys taking on UTS in the Second Semi Final. This result is a great tribute to a number of people around the club, given the situation the club was in at the start of the 2006 season.
The final round of the home and away season saw Div 2 and the 18’s take on East Coast, and Divisions 3 & 4 taking on Norwest.
The Under 18’s kick started the day with a very tight match against East Coast. The lead see-sawed between the 2 teams all day, with no team more than 8 points up at any break. The dying stages saw some crucial breaks go the way of the Eagles, and they were able to hold on for a 7 point win. Bryce Mayne, Ryan Johnston, Matt Martland, Scott Nolan, Jack O’Reilly and Jarryd Smith were the standouts on the day. Congratulations must go to all the boys and coach Mark Johnston who performed admirably all season and have provided signs of a strong future for the club.
Both the Division 3 and 4 sides suffered from a lack of numbers and as a result were on the wrong end of a heavy defeat to Norwest sides fine tuning themselves for finals campaigns. In Division 4, Matt Maddocks was the best on ground, while Matt Ophof, Jonathon Stott, Matt Sanderson, Hubert Jesuratnam and Ian Dunlop also tried their best on a tough day. For the Division 3 team, Dean Murray was best on ground, and was well supported by Matt Martland, Brett Jackson, Jarryd Smtih, Dane Ramsay and Ashley Mulcahy.
Division 2 were looking to do some fine tuning of their own when they took on East Coast, looking to repeat the free flowing game they had produced when the two teams met earlier in the year, and a 6 goal to 1 start was the start needed for this to happen. However from that point on, a combination of a more determined Eagles and a bit of rushed play from the Goannas saw the game tighten up, but the Goannas still came away with a 61 point win. Tom Parsons was best on ground with plenty of run, strong marks and 3 goals. Luke
Mansbridge and Peter Zuvela continued where they left off last week with 5 and 3 goals respectively, while Mark Hill, Anthony Bishop and Ben Dyhrberg controlling the centre. Brendan ‘Billy’ Connolly was also a rock down back, in what we are all hoping is a sign of things to come for next week’s final against UTS.
