Our Youth Girls played their Grand Final on Saturday 29th August at JJ Holland Park, Kensington and made it 4 premiership wins for Sunbury Lions.
Final Scores: Sunbury 4.6-30 def Mercy College 2.3-15
Best Players: Rhiannon Carra, Mandi Watts, Brook Surgeon, Kelsie Gill, Kirsty White, Caitlin Birrell
Goals: Caitlin Birrell 3, Rhiannon Tait 1
Undefeated Sunbury were the team to beat all season and Mercy College’s great performance throughout the season meant they were the team that were always going to challenge.
The Round 13 encounter when Mercy got within 1 point of Sunbury ensured the Grand Final was going to be a great contest.
Sunbury started the opening quarter in usual fashion with early goals that ensured Mercy was on the back foot and had to play catch up football.
Any forward thrusts by Mercy were repelled by Sunbury’s hard running half back line in Kirsty White, Kelsie Gill and Rhiannon Carra and anything that got through was mopped up with solid defence from Sarah Giles, Shelby Griffith and Olivia Clark – whose pace in the final line of defence proved decisive against bigger and taller opponents.
Sunbury’s drive from the middle was provided by its mighty mid-fielders and team leaders in Brooke Surgeon, Mandi Watts and Hannah De Raad. The hard leading Emma Black provided the tall forward option all day and she fed Sunbury’s forwards in Rhiannon Tait and Caitlin Birrell whose accuracy in front of goal proved telling in wet and windy conditions.
Simone Craige and Lisa Dellar provided plenty of drive from their wings and took their turns in the mid-field rotations which were engineered by first year coach and former premiership player Alex Agrotis.
Our first year girls in Kaitlyn Clark, Lauren Martin, Brooke Draper, Carly Morey and Lauren Surgeon all contributed to this victory.
The end result of 15 points was a fitting result for a fine season – and marks Sunbury’s 3rd Premiership in a row and 45th win in a row – a grand achievement and a testimony to the commitment of the club and its great bunch of girls.
As a result of this game the following girls have become Triple Sunbury Premiership players:
