With the season over for the Seniors it is now up to the Reserves and the U/18 Tradelink Western Magpies to fly the flag in elimination Finals this Sunday. The Reserves will face Aspley in an Elimination Final at Coorparoo on Sunday at 11.15am while the U/18's take on Mt Gravatt in a Preliminary Final at Zilmeare also on Sunday at 11.25am.
The Reserves team will face Aspley who they defeated by 49 points last Friday night at Graham Rd and thought the season was all over when Redland defeated Labrador at Victoria Point then enter the scenario no one considered when a stacked Mt Gravatt defeated Broadbeach by 91 points in a desperate attempt to make the Finals but only succeeded in eliminating Broadbeach and qualifying the Western Magpies.
As the saying goes once you are there you are there and it all starts again and this side is very capable of going all the way. No doubt with both clubs Senior teams out of the finals the make up of the two teams will be much different as they take each other on for the fifth time this season. Matt Dillon, Nich Ielasi, Will Fozard, Drew Mitchell and Scott Clarke who all finished the year in the Seniors will be available for selection in a side that performed very well last week and there will no doubt be some unlucky omissions. Reid dobson was in fine goal kicking form last week while Jack Burford dominated the game at CHB in a best on ground performance and Billy Moorhead, Jye Spencer and Blake McClennon were all in great form supported well by super sub Brett McEvoy. A solid performance should see the Magpies playing in September and prgressing deep into the finals.
The U/18's were left licking their wounds following a below par performance against a very slick Morningside outfit at esplen Oval last Sunday to taste defeat for the first time in 10 weeks but have the opportunity to book another crack at the Siders in the Grand Final if they can replicate their Qualifying Final win against Mt Gravatt this Sunday.
Key performers for the Magpies last week will need to step up again and many will have to return to the form that saw the team win 9 games on the trot. Stuart Wenham was inspirational last week and by far the teams best performer well supported by the gutsy Chris McClennan and connor Sengstock battled manfully in the ruck giving away plenty of height to his opponent. Chris Hunt battled well but was obviously dusty after backing up from the Seniors the day before and will be a key figure after freshening up this week and will not be backing up for the first time in a number of weeks. Matt Mitchell who earned his and held spot in the seniors for over a month at the end of the Seniors will be vital if he can produce a solid 4 Quarter performance in the Ruck and will be dangerous when resting down forward. Daniel Hope, Allan Borchardt, Jimmy Scarce and Alex Kitching all need to work as a unit in the midfield with their Captain and a Grand final spot with a chance at revenge will be secure.
Good Luck Boys!!
