It was standing room only today on the busy market strip which overlooked the picturesque Mt Burr oval.
The community market day hosted by the Mt Burr Football Club was held today, Sunday 25th Oct. From the opening time at 10am the crowd continued to grow. Club president Stephen Finch said, “We had approximately 300- 400 people through our market today.” Market goers enjoyed wandering through the forty assorted stalls, half of which were operated by Mt Burr residents.
Stephen added, “We were very happy with the quality of goods made in Mt Burr, as we had a strong preference for goods sold within the market to be principally made, manufactured or produced by the Stallholder”.
This was the first year and as a town, Mt Burr embraced the concept. The country town atmosphere and beautiful heritage trees added to the experience and helped make the Mt Burr market a unique experience.
Stalls held by Mt Burr residents included home grown or home-made potatoes, onions, pies, pasties, chocolates, jams, chutneys, honey, cloth nappies, sewing, knitting, crochet, plants almonds, wood work and jewelry including crystal jewelry.
Other local stall holders came from Millicent, Penola, Beachport and Thornleigh. They also had a high quality of goods and produce for sale which included cup cakes, jams, chutneys, bric a brac, face painting, fairy floss, plants, canvas art, wood carvings, smoked trout, dried fruits, soaps, jewelry, handmade stationary, fake cakes, rugs and clothed relaxation massages.
Due to the cold wind, the cappuccino machine and scones and cream were a hit with the crowd keeping them warm as they watched live entertainment on the back of a semi trailer behind Can Hill. A dancing display was performed by the Millicent Academy of Irish Dancing, Mt Burr busker, Graeme Williams played during the morning and musicians from Mt Burr, Millicent, Beachport and Adelaide played during the afternoon.
A big thank you to Rob, Chris, Rod, Mark and Jens for providing such excellent music.
During the afternoon, a debut appearance was made by vocalist, Laura Todd. Laura is also the voice you hear during home games at Mt Burr over the around ground PA system.
Laura accompanied singer/guitarist Ellie Lovegrove, who also sang a duet with the band.
The market concluded with stall holders packing up before 5pm. Many stall holders commented on the layout of the market for ease of setting up with vehicle access right next to their designated stall area. The market coordinators were very happy with the conduct of the stall holders and will invite all 2009 stallholders to register again in 2010.
