The Lions last game of the year was one of their best with a great performance against Hawkesbury today at Blacktown Olympic Park. The Lions started slowly allowing the Saints to open a 21 point lead by quarter time. The Lions improved dramatically in the second quarter matching the Saints to maintain the deficit at 21 points at half time. The third quarter was the Lions best outscoring the Saints 2 goals 3 to 1 point and reducing the deficit to 7 points going into the last quarter. The Lions had fought their way back into the game and given themselves a chance however the last quarter was not kind to the Lions and although they fought valiantly they were unable to hold the Saints and went down by 22 points.
The Lions fought bravely all day, led by Pat Pope who was involved in everything. His work in the backline kept the Lions in the game and when required he ran into the forward line to assist there as well. Adrian Boelhouwer
played exceptionally well and covered a lot of ground throughout the day. He pushed up into the backline to help out when required and was prominent in the forward line kicking one of the Lions few goals for the day. Chris Nolan played one of his better games today including an exceptional individual effort taking the ball on the half backline, kicking downfield, following up to receive the handball, kicking again, then following up to again get the footy and running in to kick a goal. Jeremy Rix played another strong game in the backline with his work ensuring the Saints did not get any easy goals. Liam Worth provided a focal point up forward and was the Lions major goalscorer for the day with 2 goals. Blake Langer battled hard all day, as always, and regularly provided an option for his teammates. Simon Masters continued his great form and had numerous kicks for the day and provided the link into the Lions forward line. Jake Jeffreys-Brown played his best game for the year and gave 100% for the entire 4 quarters and Nathan Milgate was solid in defense all day.
It was an important game for the Lions today and it was great to see them play at 100% for the entire four quarters. It was a great way to finish the season.

In a weekend where there were losses everywhere; The two top teams in the AFL, Geelong and Saint Kilda both lost, The top team in the NRL lost (who cares), In Rugby, Australia lost to New Zealand (again) and in cricket Australia lost the Ashes (again!), and to all readers of this column, the U16 Lions lost their first game in 11 matches!!! Blacktown Olympic Park (BOP as it is known) was slippery with the dew, the lights never really took effect to the last quarter and the smoke/haze over the whole area was choking, but the excuses were not the problem. For all that were there at the game, our Lions players did not turn up to play!
We lost a game where scoring was difficult and the team that got some lucky calls from the officials won the ball. Ultimately though, it was the 30 point lead we gave the Razorbacks in the 2nd quarter that cost us the game. On too many occasions, we left Razorback players without an opposition or played from behind as our positional play went out the window! To our credit we fought back, and probably, if the game went for another 5 minutes – we might have scraped a few points to win, but it wasn’t to be. We outscored the Razorbacks 2 goals to 1 in each of the 3rd and 4th quarters. Ben scored 5 goals and Rick 2 but it was our lowest score in ages! We have beaten this team by at least 3 goals in our last few encounters but on Saturday we lost by a goal. Lions 7 – 8 – 50 to the Razorbacks 8 – 9 – 57.
Positives were Nick returned from injury and for a change we had all but 2 players available for the game. The most positive thing is that with determination and training, complacency should be removed from our game. Players won’t be attending parties on Friday night – we hope, and the will to win and the hunger to put a team away will return. Limping our way into a grand-final, would have been a worry, smashing our way through a final and then a grand-final is a preferred method. Please join us for our preliminary final game against the Norwest Jets this Saturday at Greygums oval Cranebrook (home of Penrith swans and the Rams) for a 3:30pm start.
