The Tradelink Western Magpies will have another chance this week to have an impact on the QAFL Finals make up when they take on the Brisbane Lions Reserves on Saturday 3.20pm at the GABBA. Last week the Magpies best 2009 performance away from Chelmer ended any hope of Redland earning a home qualifying final with a solid performance losing by 27 points. This week if the Magpies can finish the season with a well deserved win following their overall improvement during the course of the season they will have the added bonus of knocking the Lions out of the Velocity Sports Cup Finals.
Loyal Magpies fans wishing to cheer the Magpies along will need to contact Anthony McDonald on 0407718303 by 4pm this afternoon if they want access to very limmited tickets for the game. Those wishing to attend will have to purchase general admission tickets or can use reserved tickets for this weeks Lions game or Lions 2009 membership tickets to gain entry to the ground. Public entry gates will Open at 3.10pm only ten minutes before the QAFL game starts.
If the Magpies are to nail that illusive win which would be an outstanding way to finish a tough debut season in the QAFL on a posative note they will have to play 4 great quarters of football and be lead strongly by the likes of Tim McEvoy, Ed McDonnell, Matt Skubis, Luke Scott, David Hamill and Josh Barton. If that group of players can set the standard early the horde of Western Magpies youngsters Ben Jaenke-Cain, Chris Judson, Richard Wenham, Matt Dillon, Drew Mitchell and Greg Friis will follow and given a confident start could pose plenty of problems for the Lions.
The babies of the group will provide plenty of enthusiasm on the AFL Venue with 16 year old Jackson Allen returning to the Senior line up after being rested last week following his Round 16 Rising Star Nomination. Chris Hunt who played a great game last week on former Melbourne star Geoff White will be looking to take his game to another level on the big stage against the Lions. Coach Paul Grentell will be demanding his players put all they have learned this season together for one final complete four quarter performance and leave the GABBA with a win and 4 Premiership points and take that momentum into season 2010. The Senior line up is attached.
Meanwhile tonight against Aspley 7pm at Graham Road the Reserves have their backs well and truely against the wall needing to defeat second placed Aspley if they are to have any chance of sneaking into the finals. If they are able to beat Aspley who have beat the Magpies three times previously this year all by narrow margins the Magpies then have to rely on Labrador to beat the red hot Redland Bombers at Victoria Point tomorrow. Good luck boys!
On Sunday the U/18 Magpies will be aiming for nine in a row when they take on Morningside in the Sports Ready U/18 Division 1 Qualifying Final at Esplen Oval at 2pm. The Magpies were beaten by 16 points by Morningside nearly 10 weeks ago now and have gone through an amazing transformation under coach Des Lashman and new assistant Reid Dobson and are playing a much more consistant, structured and high scoring brand of football. The young Magpies should have every belief in themselves and their ability to knock off the siders and book a spot in the Grand Final. Go get em lads!
