Vets Round 10 v’s Freo (Again)
Twenty one fit and agile men took the field to restore some pride after we begged the league to play Freo again and not a lesser team. Due to a fixturing nightmare we played the purple twice in a few months although this time we knew how they played and worked their own strengths against them. They play better when they have the ball so we knocked it out of bounds a lot and let them kick a few extra goals to waste time.
After Stacky pulled out due to a kidney complaint (for some reason his weren’t coping with the work load from Spider’s 400th), Rexy took the reins and after a first half of whistle swallowing got the Shiites with the Freo ump for favoring the purple and blew a few for us.
Highlights include:
Buzz: Tried more one handed marks than the Fugitives one armed man …..but failed to drag any of them in. Actually leaped off the ground on two occasions but again failed to mark. Snapped a sensational point. Must have thought the selectors were watching for player selection in the Mainy match.
Noodles: Not his normally dominant scoring display in the forward line. Presented repeatedly on the lead only to have poor delivery let him down. Chased an opponent for a few steps before letting him go.
PB: Played up forward and kicked a point. I hate to say it, but …..looked like a fish out of water in the forward line. Found the footy in the last quarter when he pushed back to the flank.
Tug: Played okay for a scrubber. His four opponents only kicked ten from the back pocket. They changed after getting tired of kicking goals. Fell over his own muddy feet in the last after manly spoiling the120kg full forward whose agility prevailed as he rose to his feet and booted a goal.
Wayno: Kicked our only goal in the second as his opponent claimed it came of his boot and we were given a point. Surely missing the ball by a meter is close enough to kicking it through?
Langers: Went down in the third like a sack of manure. Screamed as his kneecap nearly fell off as one of the smaller 115kg Freo blokes wrenched his leg the wrong way.
Biscuits: Played okay for a Weagles supporter. Had a stint at fullback for a quarter but didn’t see the ball (must have gone high over his head). Still has a good step for an old bloke.
Hoff: A soft display from the big fella. Didn’t pick a fight this week. Hasn’t run for 6 weeks and let his fitter opponents milk him. Won a lot of centre clearances but you won’t see a kind word from me for that bro!
Brad: Great game from the new comer without a real name. Marked strongly and ran too. Could have kicked a goal but tried to pass off!!! …Foolish
Hibbo: Took a blow to the head and a scratch to the nose. I hope he didn’t slip the tongue in!
Scotty: Didn’t get smashed but did smash some poor Freo bloke who had his head over the ball (but must have been holding it in) as the bald Eagle swooped in and took out his prey……. then bleated his innocence to the ump as a free kick was awarded. It’s alright mate, I saw it! Looked okay to me!
Cambo: back from the dead and a few kilos lighter. Have you forgotten the rule mate? You need to put on weight to play vets.
Tiny Tim: Survived a day in the ruck and did well considering his opponent was nine foot tall. Strong marking. Ran out of puff towards the end as the ball kept finding him.
Coyley: Came back for a kick since the missus was away. Did well early before fading late in the game. Tried to come off late but instead moved back to the forward line which was almost the same thing.
Grumpy: Arrived but was very unhappy he had to play. Marked a few towards the end and even gathered the loose ball and then thought he could step and break tackles. In your dreams buddy!
Spacko: Could not resist playing on. The one time he marked and stopped and then pushed back for the kick, he kicked into the man on the mark, gathered …..and then played on. Did anyone see chuck chuck? I must have missed it but I’m sure he would have.
Tapps: Came back after ten weeks taking it easy. I didn’t see him flatten anyone so can’t of played his best game. Appeared stuffed at the end of each quarter so must have been faking it!
Symmo: Made a bit of space on the flank but found the going tough as the Freo boys played very serious disciplined footy.
Paves: Has a beautiful seven meter burst of pace but then slows to a crawl. Kicks or handballs after eight yards so it woks well. Took a screamer in the last as one leg rose off the turf.
Rambo: Came back with the real fellas for a run and took the game on. Rotated off the bench like a champion but didn’t take any speckies or magic steps this week.
Brenno: Solid game in defense and took a few strong marks running back with the flight of the ball. I was more than happy to get out of the way.
A better show from the boys but a call for action is required. We are in danger of taking the game too seriously. We need a white board and a few more player rotations for fun …and some more sledging your team mates during game time please. Need to get Holmsey back on the ball and PB back to the Back line. Two more injuries and a few away for the next game. . Recruit recruit recruit!!!
Since we’re not talking footy for a week, let’s just sit back and watch the Ashes. Australia v’s a combines England/South Africa side.
