SENIORS FINAL SCORE
VERMONT 19-19-133 def NORWOOD 15-7-97
The Eagles made it 10 wins in a row and after Lilydale were smashed by Blackburn we are now in 3rd spot and the double chance. Next week we visit Balwyn who are coming off a loss while Lilydale face a danger game at home against Noble Park. The double chance and 3rd spot will go down to the wire. Supporters, don’t forget next Saturday the Colts play at Lilydale starting at 9.45am. Another fine but windy day at Vermont with three changes – In came McLure, Dore and M.Stewart and out injured were Cotchett, Nummy and Griffiths. Morse could return through the reserves next week.
We kicked to the scoring end in the first term but kicked inaccurately. Froud was again the punters pal with the first goal followed by Mendes who was to finish the day with 3 goals. Norwood kicked a couple before Greig goaled on the siren to give us a 12 point lead at ¼ time 3-7 to 2-1. Norwood kicked the first 2 goals after the break as we attacked into the breeze with 3 behinds. It was then goal for goal as Johnson goaled then Greig via Bardon. A quick reply by Norwood as we couldn’t shake them off then Stephen goaled via Bardon then Greig via Mendes and Mullett. During the half Fyfe and Cullen were grand in defence while Stephen, Henley, Bardon and Mullett were dangerous with their slick ball movement. At ½ time we led by 13 points 7-10 to 6-3. Better players for the half were Bardon, Cullen, Fyfe, Henley, Mullett, Ross and Greig.
In the 3rd quarter with the wind we set up a match winning lead kicking 8-5 to 3-2.
Mendes and Mullett kicked our first two followed by Stephen via Papillo. Mullett who was playing a terrific game kicked another followed by Johnson who kicked his second via McKernen. A word about McKernan – he is coming along in leaps and bounds and his foot speed over 15 metres is incredible. Mendes was having another sensational day as he booted his third – what a valuable player he has become with his hardness at the ball and now kicking a few goals. Froud goaled via Dore and Greig then Greig set up 2 more goals by Dore and Ross. At ¾ time we led 15-15 to 9-5. Mullett and Mendes had an outstanding quarter.
Norwood sent a few shivers down our spine kicking 3 quick goals in the final term especially as we knew third spot was there for the taking. Froud and Greig steadied the ship with goals. Norwood would not go away and kicked 2 more before Debney goaled via McKernan with the Eagles home by 36 points. Better players for the half were Mullett, Mendes, Stephen, Bardon, Cullen, Fyfe and McCarthy.
Goalkickers – Greig 4, Froud 3, Mendes 3 with 2 each to Mullett, Stephen and Johnson and singles to Ross, Debney and Dore.
Best Players – Mendes and Mullett (equal best), Fyfe, Bardon, Stephen, Henley, Cullen and Ross.
Possessions – Bardon 40, Mullett 35, Henley 34, Stephen 30, Mendes and Fyfe 25 and Ross 22.
1% - Papillo 14, Mendes 13, McLure and Henley 7 and McCarthy 6.
Coach’s Comments – We couldn’t quite put them away however a big pat on the back.
RESERVES FINAL SCORE
VERMONT 12-12-84 def NORWOOD 12-7-79
Another win to the reserves and after a slow start to the season Jeff Rudd and his boys have won 5 games in the second half of the year.
It was a low scoring first quarter with Illott and Ryan kicking goals while Cameron was continuing his great recent form. At ¼ time we led 2-1 to 1-2. Norwood hit the front with the first 2 goals after the break but we answered with goals from Siakavelis and Henderson. Henderson was having a good game with 14 touches in the 1st half along with 11 hit outs. At half time we led 4-4 to 4-2. Better players for the half were Henderson, Illott, Cameron, Rogneda and F.Stewart.
It was 4 goals each in the 3rd term with Norwood kicking the first two and hitting the front. Bull goaled via Whitchell then Bright kicked 2 in quick succession. Bull kicked his second and Rosewarne appeared to goal before the siren but the goal was disallowed – I will bet my reputation it was a goal. At ¾ time we led 8-9 to 8-5.
Norwood hit the front with the first goal of the last quarter then that goal kicking machine Luke Illott booted his second. Illott was playing a wonderful captain’s game leading by example. When Caneva, McDonald and Fletcher Stewart goaled the match looked safe but Norwood kicked 2 late goals to get within 5 points. With a minute to go we held on and gained another narrow win after so many went the other way early in the season. Better players for the half were Henderson, Illott, F.Stewart and Rogneda.
Goalkickers – 2 each to Illott, Bright, and Bull and singles to Ryan, Siakavelis, Caneva, F.Stewart, Henderson and McDonald.
Coach’s Best Players – Henderson, Illott, F.Stewart, Rogneda, Alexander and Caneva.
Coach’s Comments – A very hard physical game of footy – to hang in was fantastic. Blokes rose above what they have been delivering – really well done.
COLTS FINAL SCORE
NORWOOD 11-12-78 def 9-9-63
We were the better team early considering Norwood was playing for a finals spot. After 3 early misses Williams goaled then Geraghty goaled after a good build from defence which highlighted long kicking and little handball. Things were looking good when Williams kicked is second via Youseff. At ¼ time we led 3-2 to 1-3. In the second quarter we kicked 3-1 to 2-2. Wiulliams kicked his third via Youseff then Ferres goaled via Carrados. Checkley probably kicked the goal of the day aftera terrific running effort. At half time we led 6-3 to 3-5. Better players for the half were Williams, Geraghty, Murphy, Checkley and Youseff.
We kicked ourselves out of a winning position in the 3rs term adding 1-6 to 2-3 with the wind. Our only goal came from Carrados via Vasbinder. We had 70% of the play but just couldn’t nail it At ¾ time we led 7-9 to 5-8. Norwood had the wind in the last quarter and had to win for a chance to play in the finals and that desire saw them overpower the Eagles kicking 6-4 to 2 goals. Our 2 goals came from Castersen and Williams.
