This Sunday at 2pm at Wildbrook Wines Park the BGM Images U/18 Western Magpies will host Mt. Gravatt in a Qualifying Final with the winner earning the right to take on minor premiers Morningside to secure first spot in the Sports Ready U/18 Division 1 Grand Final. The Magpies last defeat of the season was against Mt Gravatt at Ditmer Park by 14 points way back in Round 9 at a point when the young Magpies were in a patch of inconsistency. Since that day the Magpies have completely turned their season around winning their last 7 games of the season without a loss and are hitting the finals in great form.
The Des Lashman coached Magpies have been led well all season by Stuart Wenham in an outstanding line up of young guns consisting of many players from other local junior clubs which has taken some time to come together but since that happened following that Mt Gravatt game they have played an outstanding brand of team football. Leading in the Ruck department all year Andrew McConnell has given first use to the likes of Stuart Wenham, Jimmy Scarce, Tom Baldwin, James Collins, Allan Borchardt and Daniel Hope. The midfield have been providing great service to the potent forward line of Connor Sengstock, Jake Knight, Bernard Seir, Alex Dickfos and Nicholas Reid. The real strength of the young Magpies is the backline which can stop the opposition but also rebound strongly out of defence through Jesse Hemple, Kurt Sengstock, Steve Friis, Cameron Mitchell-Hill, Bryce Crossley, Cory Colhoun, Mitchell Oats, Paul Hardess and Jordan Patterson.
The young Magpies will also be bolstered by Matt Mitchell and Chris McLennan who have been released from the Senior Team to play in this final along with Alex Kitching who has been in outstanding form in the Reserves over the last couple of weeks. The contrast between the uncertain combination that was defeated by Mt Gravatt last time to the well drilled confident team that is looking for its eighth straight win is significant topped off with the home ground advantage should see the Magpies winning to set a date with Morningside for a Grand Final birth.
