Finally
a Saturday with no wind but a very determined opponent in Emmaus St
Leos who were fighting off relegation! The animals were out of the
blocks early and had 2 majors on the board before we troubled the
scorers. As soon as the rain started to fall we clicked into gear with
strong run and carry and two potent targets up forward in Daou &
Cunningham. We really stamped our mark on the game as Johnny “The
Sultan” Daou stood on the head of an unfortunate young animal who had
the courage(lunacy) to back into the big man’s space! Woods was equally
dangerous and posted a couple for the quarter himself. However it was
AJ Adgemis and Dogga Smith who were our catalysts in getting the ball
to the running brigade and with high skill we really put the game
beyond the Animal’s by the end of the first quarter.
We
went into the second quarter with a 5 goal lead and got moving again
early through Scannell’s run which was being well backed by our wingers
Janson and Marchesi again it was the Woods and Daou show up forward
with each of them posting their 3rd goals early in the quarter. However
the animals were able stem the tide by flooding our forward line and
causing us to take too many long shots on goal. We had put 3.5 on the
board to ESL 2.2 and went into the sheds at the main break with a 6
goal lead.
Our
forwards adjusted early and Cunningham started to emerge as a new
problem for the Animals with a quick goal and a couple of big grabs.
Arthurson & Daou were now sharing the ruck duties and giving our
onballers first use off the footy. We really spread the animals well
and our potent forward line was on target kicking 5.1 for the quarter.
Woods was marking everything and posted his 5th. Gezza Kennedy produced
the highlight of the game as he received a slick handball and burst
through the top of the arc to smack a 50 metre ball burster through.
In the huddle at 3 quarter I asked the boys to round out the day by winning the 4th quarter
which they did with aplomb adding 7.4 in the quarter with dual goals
from Cunningham and Woods. It was great to see youngster “Daisy “
Robson-Long give us a glimpse of his potential as he presented and
marked strongly at half forward to create a couple of goals. The
skipper was rewarded for his hard work with his second a great left
foot snap! All in all it was a really good team effort and the start of
our run into the finals!
Special
mention to 2 of the more unheralded players in the side in Dogga Smith
and AJ Adgemis who both had outstanding games along with Adam Woods
white hot form!
Cheers, Feuta
