Under 1O's Gold
Round 16 saw the U 10 Golds assemble in high spirits at Shaw Park to take on the Quakers Hill Reds. Ryan O led the Golds out as Captain for the day and as the Reds were a little short of numbers Heath and Oliver helped them out for the first half, and Mason and Shamous for the second. The Reds supporters quickly adopted our boys as they showed their skills and great sportsmanship even against their mates. I think there was talk of contracts after the game but I'm sorry we have the boys locked in!
The game was pretty one sided as the now well oiled U10 Golds played great team football to gain an early strong position. As has been the way throughout this season the team enjoyed their footy and played in a great spirit against their opposition, always showing them respect.
Player of the match was Blake who in one quarter must have had about 20 possessions and never stopped contesting for the ball. He was well supported throughout and set up a few times by Bailey who also had a great game finishing with 5 goals! Well done Bailey and nice to see the way you also enjoy setting up your team mates.
Thanks also to Shane who again helped us out and got 2 goals in the process. Shane has the skills and is ready for a big season next year.
Great games also to Abbey, and Damilare, who has been one of our real improvers as the season has progressed.
GO LIONS!
Under 14's
The Lions faced Campbelltown/Wollondilly Swans at Shaw Park again this week in perfect football conditions. The Lions were hoping to reverse the result from last week and everyone in the team was committed to giving 100%. The game started well with the Lions taking the ball from the first bounce and driving it into the forward line. The Lions kept control of the ball for most of the quarter but did not really capitalize on their opportunities and went to the first break level with the Swans at 7 points all. The Lions worked hard in the second quarter and kicked 3 goals to the Swans 1 to establish a 12 point lead at half time. The third quarter saw the Lions outscore the Swans 2 goals to 1 to stretch the lead to 21 points going into the last quarter. The Lions were starting to tire and the Swans took the opportunity and came back strongly kicking 3 goals to the Lions 1 in the last quarter. Fortunately the Lions were able to hang on to win by 7 points.
There were plenty of Lions who played well this week with Jake Jeffreys-Brown being the stand out player of the day. He was well supported by Pat Pope who was involved in everything around the ground and continually ran through the centre of the ground driving the Lions into attack. Adrian Boelhouwer played a sensational game using his speed, running the ball into the forward line with great effect. Liam Worth was switched to full forward this week and played an excellent game contributing an important goal. Jeremy Rix played at full back this week and did a sensational job defensively and was instrumental in taking the Lions from defense into attack. Nathan Milgate played in the forward line today and positioned himself well and scored a valuable goal for the Lions. Blake Langer played an excellent game running hard all day and contesting the ball with great determination. Hugh Arnold played a strong game at half back and provided the drive into the forward line.
Overall it was a great effort from the Lions who never gave up all day and hung on to record an important win.

Under 16's by Paul Hocking
Another sunny afternoon at Shaw Park was the venue for the second last normal round game against the Campbelltown Blues. While the Blues only had 16 players with a couple of Under 14’s backing up, the Lions were down on numbers as well with Blake, Mark, Tom, Rick, Brendan, Dylan and Nick (who may now NOT have an operation on his knee) all unavailable. Thankfully, backing up from the under 14’s, we had Adrian, Pat, Jeremy and Chris all playing so we were able to send players over to the Blues so an 18 on 18 game was assured. Bob Mitchell and Tom Kelly (and Nick) all look splendiferous in their yellow runners shirts, while Tim Wade made sure the scoreboard was correct as goal umpire. Paul Devlin, who has obviously been practising his throw ins, ran the boundary while coaches Glen and John sorted the positional board so all was in readiness for an enjoyable afternoon.
The first quarter saw Michael, Grant and Luke all don the Blues jerseys to give the opposition a sporting chance, but it was the Lions who started like a team in 8th place. Dan snapped the first goal for the Lions but the Blues made a quick reply. A good long kick saw Jackson kick his first goal while a little later after some sustained pressure Brayden kicked the Lions third goal. The blues with determined running and good passes scored the next goal but then a free kick for good tackling saw Jeremy kick a goal. Dan was forced from the field (and the game) with a wrist injury, while Jeremy was seeing stars and could not finish the game after a heavy tackle. The blues finished the quarter stronger to be only one goal off the lead. The scores at the first break were 4 – 3 – 27 to 3 – 3 – 21.
With Jordan and Mitch giving the Blues assistance for the second quarter, the Lions responded to the coaches blast by starting to play like an AFL team heading for the finals. Jackson kicked long for Ben to do what he does best – take marks in the goal square and then easily kick the goal. Pat roved well from a ruck and kicked long to the goal square for Ben to again take the mark and goal. To show what a talent he is, Ben then roved from a contest and while running towards the centre about 40m from goal kicked back towards the sticks for the ball to bounce and roll through for 6 points. Then a great team goal was scored. Running from centre-half back, Brayden kicked long to Ben who tapped on to Pat who then ran to an open goal but hand-passed to an unmarked over the last defender to Michael for an easy goal. At the other end, the Blues were creating or being given opportunities to score but kept spraying their set shots at goal. The last goal for the quarter was again, than man Ben roving and snapping over his shoulder for 4th goal of the quarter. The Lions went to the long break 9 – 7 – 61 to the Blues 4 – 8 – 32.
For a challenge, Chris and Pat were sent over to the Blues for the third quarter. The opening goal was scored by Ben after making sure of a bouncing chip kick by Alex H. The Blues replied with a goal, but then Jackson roved from the centre ran and bounced, then steadied for a good goal. A free kick gave a goal to the Blues, but then Alex H. ended up with the ball after a free kick. After trying to give the opportunity to someone else he took one step and piloted the ball over the goal umpires head. Jordan ran on with a bouncing ball to kick the ball through the goal before being driven into the ground. Jackson kicked his second goal for the quarter when he intercepted a kick-in from their fullback and kicked back over his head for the Lions to take a strong lead 14 – 13 – 97 to 6 – 8 – 44.
For the final quarter, Sam and Alex W. joined the Blues. After an opening goal to the Blues it was all Lions for the rest of the game. Adrian kicked long to the goal square for Ben to mark and goal. Ben was then put into the backs for a rest with Shaun being switched to the forwards. Brayden snapped successfully for his second goal, while James kicked a magnificent 50+ metre goal to open his account. Shaun finally kicked a goal from a free kick after missing to the left and right in earlier attempts. Roving from a contest saw Alex H. run into an open goal for his second for the game. With Ben off the ground, Shaun marked well in the goal square before hand passing off for Grant to goal. Following Shaun’s next mark and shot at goal – no less than 4 Lions players were standing around like seagulls for a chance to get a goal. Mitch was the recipient of Shaun’s generosity and team play to kick a goal. The game ended with the Lions running away, 22 – 19 – 151 to the Blues 7 – 9 – 51.
Most pleasing for the coaches was that with personal being moved around or missing, the Lions have built their game steadily to be running all over the opposition in the final quarter – especially going into a finals series. Ben was given the Dominoes award for his “freakish” efforts while Jackson playing all over the ground as ruckman or rover will enjoy a visit to Krispy Kremes. Others to get a mention include Brayden, Marty, James and Adrian from the 14’s. We now face off with our number one opposition, the Razorbacks at Harrington Park next weekend. We look forward to your continuing support.
