We looked ready for action from the start this day and what a difference
that makes. Nathan Cooper built on a good performance last week and looked back
to his best. He profited from a great shepherd from Jonathan Bell which allowed
him to break away down the wing and link up with Matthew Bellchambers and
Andrew Adair for an early scoring opportunity. It was good to see us apply good
forward pressure on kick-ins to ensure the opposition earned every yard of
ground. Casey Brittain was particularly effective in this department patrolling
the 50 metre arc and often gaining possession with his great marking. Connor
Pedwell and Trent Wilson both played confidently, attacking the ball well to
secure the ball for the Hornets.
Harris Andrews had his best game of the season and is hitting his straps
at the business end of proceedings. It is no coincidence that Harris has been
the really putting in at training lately and once again shows that form on the
training paddock translates to form on match day. Keep up the good work Harris!
Sam Robin was very effective across the half-back line. One of Sam’s tackles
caused a turnover and scoring opportunity for Mitchell Crawley who was another
to be at or near his best. Stuart Lester and Nicholas Falconer again worked
expertly together and thrived on the wonderful service from the ruckmen Jordan
Richardson and Dominic Ceolin. When they weren’t in the ruck Jordan and Dominic
busied themselves by taking a number of great overhead marks or tackling well.
Both are in stellar form and setting the bar a little higher each week.
Roman Sargent made a welcome return from injury and rightfully picked up
an award for this gusty display. He showed good skills to combine with Casey
Brittain in a hand-ball ‘give and get’ that looked straight out of the coaching
manual. Jarrod Henry showed his feel for the game when he carried the ball from
deep in defence to the wing rather than bombing long and probably turning the
ball over. Jarrod does a lot of little things that although not necessarily
spectacular go a long way to making us the team we are. Well done Jarrod – keep
up the great work! Jarrod Macdonald and Bryce Stackelberg looked very dangerous
each time they handled and both worked their way into space to provide an
effective link from the backs to the forwards. Shane Hele showed great pace to
win the race to the ball on a number of occasions and Jonah Eoe worked hard all
day for his team to keep the opposition on the back foot.
Play of the Day
End to end stuff started by a kick-in from Jarrod Henry that hit the
chest of Harris Andrews who had given his opponent the slip and took an
uncontested mark. Harris turned and spotted Bryce Stackelberg sprinting into
space on the wing and Bryce marked the accurate pass. Bryce wheeled around to
size up his options and spotted Jonathan Bell leading from his opponent.
Jonathan squared the ball up to Dominic Ceolin at around centre half-forward. Dominic played on and hit Andrew Adair with a
great pass. Andrew still had a bit to do to finish off the move but showed he
was back to his best with a great hit that sailed over the goal umpire’s hat.
Great stuff!
Bottom Line
Areas of improvement include the talk on the field. Letting teammates
know if they are hot or free so they can make more informed decisions about
their ball disposal. Another area is the one-percenters: shepherding for a
team-mate to give him more space. Both relate to thinking about the game the
whole time it’s in progress not just when you have the ball. Ask what you can
do to help a team-mate. All the little acts of team work go together to make
the best performance we can muster – and that is our goal!
