In last weekends matches, it was good old fashioned Olinda weather. At different points in the day, the scoreboard dissapeared as well as the players. Still, everyone had a real crack and it was a day of solid results.
NETBALL
A GRADE
Coming up against one of the top teams we were determined that we would improve the scoreline ( a loss of 50 goals ) from our first encounter with Emerald earlier in the season- and we did ! The team played magnificently and at half time were only down 1 goal. Although Emerald took the win by 14 goals it was a great effort by all the team. The team has really found their feet and it is really pleasing to see the way they now combine across all areas of the court.
Fiona, Cassie & Elle were strong in defence and Emerald had to work hard to get their goals. Bec in WD not only made the entry to goal difficult, she was a key link to the attacking end. Mel showed her skill in directing the attack plays. Everyone put in second efforts and all deserve congratulations for a very good game.
B GRADE
In tough and trying conditions we had a difficult time keeping our noses in front for the whole match. Emerald are a strong unit and to be honest, we matched it for a large part of the game. Our team appears to lift when we play at home and it makes a big difference when we get plenty of Olinda support. A good all round effort from all players. A great performance by Elise Tanzen who held her body and positioned very well in the ring.
Next weeks game against Yea is going to be tough but not out of reach !
FOOTBALL
U18S
The boys bounced back this week to gather the four points against a spirited Emerald opposition. The boys used the ball well up and down the ground and were provided with a very good hit out leading into this weeks blockbuster vs Warburton.
Lukey was inspirational throughout the day throwing his little frame into every pack, dislocating his shoulders, popping them back in, then throwing himself into yet another pack. Michael Ruigrok enhanced his claim as the clubs best tap ruckmen with a flawless display of ruck work at centre bounces. This enabled our on ballers first use of the ball and thus more forward entries than our opponent. All our forwards contributed well, Tom Dawson, Tom Lazdins and "Mr Reliable"- Callum Beattie were all very good in defence.
RESERVES
Despite quite a few players not being available through injury the Reserves continued their dominance by effectively doubling the fifth placed Emerald side’s score in very wet & muddy conditions. The highlight of the day was Andy Greenall bringing up ‘the ton’. He now sits on 101 goals for the season & to our knowledge is the first senior player in our history to do so. Well done Andy! His five goals for the day were matched by his sharp shooting partner Adam Borg who now sits on 70 goals.
Having acknowledged the importance of having a lethal forward line it’s just as important to record that the win also once again came from the terrific drive generated up field from Simon Leone, Gavin Nautili, Shannon Fitzgerald, Russell Sloan, James O’Reilly plus Darren & Ash Reid. Special commendations to the many U’18’s who played a second game for the day under appalling conditions, all of whom performed extremely well.
SENIORS
In tough wet conditions, the senior team come up against an in form Emerald team who the week prior accounted for Seville by 15 goals. The boys come out hard in the first and put on the first couple of goals and led at the short break by 22 points. Emerald hung in and kept applying pressure and outscored us but only just and at half time, we led by 18 points.
The backline held firm throughout the second half allowing Emerald 4.2 and our forward line and midfield stepped it up kicking 7.2 This gave us a handy break of 30 points going into the final quater. Our last quater was dominant and all around the ground we had winners with Evans, O'Niell, Day and Davis combining across the backline and Millwood breaking the lines to keep Emerald at Bay.
The forward were holding strong marks and the small crumbing well in the muddy conditions. We piled on 5.3 to 2 goals giving us a 57 point win.
Best players were Day, Tregoning, Davis, Troutman and Rosier.
