Aug 09 – Round 14 - Aspley Hornets U12 Brown Vs Springwood Pumas
We
were home against the bottom placed Springwood and as per usual they were a
bigger side than us. It was a pretty good crowd because three of the under 12
sides were playing after one another. Stacey volunteered to time keep, with Georgia’s help
and they both had an impromptu timekeeper’s lesson from Les. Reevesie talked to the boys about the
fantastic effort last week and the need to continue in the same vein.
We
were ready to go and the umpire held up the ball for the start of the game…….
Siren where’s the siren…..SIREN…….”Stacey blow the siren” yells the goal umpire
(Ray Lawrence). After a debate between Stacey and Georgia the siren blew. And
we were off. The Pumas came to play and hit the boys hard, putting on some big
tackles that hurt. When the boys got it clear of the pack they ran well and got
three quick goals, Jordy, Zane and Adam (a free kick after the siren) got the
goals.
In
the second quarter the boys were starting to relax and shy away from the
contest. When the Puma’s got it into their forward line our backline lead by
Dylan and Dan rebounded and we kicked two goals. We were second to the ball,
but when we got it we were more skilful and got the ball into our forward line.
Hornets
5 – 2: 32 Pumas 1 – 1: 7
Reevesie
got into the boys about shying away from the contest and not playing in front.
They looked disinterested and seemed to be in another place, maybe looking
towards Kenmore already.
The
second half was not much better and the boys did enough to stay in front, but then
relaxed. We kicked two third quarter goals; one to Bradley and the other to our
full forward Kelley. However, I think Springwood won the quarter. For the rest
of the half we toiled, the Pumas tackled hard and made us shy away from the
contest. It was not a pretty game, our superior skills and our hard working
back line won us the game.
Final
Score: Hornets 8 – 3: 51 to Pumas 4 – 2: 26
The
boys scrapped out another win, it wasn’t pretty but a win, all the same. We
will have to pick up our game for the Kenmore
(If the boys minds were on the next game). Dylan was on the tallest boy on the
ground and gave him a touch up. Dylan ran off the big boy and backed his
judgement. He was hard at the ball all day and never gave up. The back line
stood tall, as per usual, and never let the Pumas get a score to win the game.
They rebounded the ball all day and setup many of our goals. A better effort
will be required this week and I am sure the boys will work hard and step up.
