SENIORS FINAL SCORE
VERMONT 23-23-168 def WANTIRNA SOUTH 9-11-65
Another cold windy day at Wantirna South. In came Cullen, Rushton and Will Debney for his first game. Out were McLure (inj) along with Henderson and McKernan who dropped back. Matt Greig with his 9 goals is poised to set a club goalkicking record against Blackburn on Saturday. Greig is on 581 goals equal with Garry Oakman. On the debit side Tom Davidson has played his last game with the club. We have now won 8 in a row.
We kicked with the wind in the first term and Greig was again the punters pal with first goal. The Devils replied with two before Greig kicked his second. At ¼ time the scoreboard did not look impressive as we led 2-4 to 2-1 against the bottom team.
They were playing 2 extra men in defence and it seemed to choke our game. In the 2nd quarter we began well with goals to Papillo then Cullen via Bardon. With Rushton and Cullen back in defence it was great to see Bardon playing forward of centre where he is most damaging. The Devils kicked the next 4 goals with the wind but a late goal from Greig after a good tackle in the square reduced the defecit to 2 points at ½ time. WS led 6-5 to 5-9 and we really had a game on our hands. Better players for the half were Rushton, Fyfe, Papillo, Mullett. Mendes and Cotchett.
It was a completely different story after ½ time with the Eagles kicking 4 quick goals with 2 from Greig and singles to Froud and Mullett. Any thought of an upset was diminished. Bardon was damaging and the backline was on top with Fyfe, Rushton, McCarthy, Cullen and Waller pumping the ball forward. Goals to Stephen and Greig capped off a good quarter and at ¾ time we led 11-15 to 8-7.
Into the wind in the last term we kicked a massive 12-5 to 1-4. Froud was on fire kicking 4 goals in the last quarter while the countdown was on with Matt Greig for the club record. Mullett kicked 3 goals with singles to Dore and Griffiths. Greig kicked 2 goals then kicked his 9th with a great snap as he equalled the club record. During this period Greig was extremely unselfish in giving Froud a handpass 2 metres out of goal. I had the distinct feeling Greig decided he wanted to set the record on the big stage at Vermont on Saturday. A huge percentage boosting win by 107 points. Better players for the half were Mullett, Greig, Froud, Bardon, Stephen, Ross, Cullen, Nummy and Rushton,
Goalkickers – Greig 9, Froud 5, Mullett 4 and singles to Papillo, Stephen, Cullen, Griffiths and Dore.
Best Players – Mullett, Greig, Rushton, Stephen, Cullen, Fyfe, Bardon, Cotchett and Froud in the 2nd half.
Possessions – Mullett 33, Bardon 32, Cotchett 29, Stephen 27, Rushton 24, Cullen 23 with 21 each to Nummy, Fyfe and Henley.
1% - Stephen 10, Mullett 8, Ross 7 and Debney 6. Mullett took 13 marks and Greig 10. Ross had 34 hit outs.
Coach’s Comments – We couldn’t counter their game style in the first half. We totally outplayed them in the second half. A massive week coming up.

WANTIRNA SOUTH 13-14-92 def VERMONT 8-8-56
Although the Devils were in the 5 and two games clear of Vermont, we went into the game buoyed that we had beaten them easily in Round 3.
They came out with so much spirit and kicked the first 4 goals before Vasbinder kicked ours. At ¼ time they led 4-3 to 1-1.
They took a firm grip on the game by kicking the first 2 goals after the break. Goals came form Youseff then Cooper via McKernan. At half time they led 7-7 to 3-4. Better players for the half were S.Williams, Geraghy and Woolard.
It was 2 goals each in the 3rd term. Goals coming from Barry-Murphy and Sam Williams after a terrific individual effort. At ¾ time they led 9-12 to 5-6.
In the last quarter Youseff kicked his 2nd along with Barry-Murphy. Wantirna South made a good thing of victory with the next 3 unanswered goals before Youseff kicked his 3rd. The Devils victors by 36 points. Better players for the half were Johnson, Geraghty and S.Williams.
Goalkickers – Youseff 3, Barry-Murphy 2 and singles to Vasbinder, Cooper and S.Williams.
Coach’s Best Players – Woolard, Johnson, Geraghty, S.Williams, Colasanti and Baird.
Coach’s Comments – They wanted it more than you – we were second to the footy. We have blokes in the comfort zone. That one’s gotta hurt with a 140 point turnaround from our previous meeting.
