Rd 15 v St Clair
Round 15 and the season is rapidly drawing to a close. The team assembled at 8am to warm up for the 8.30am kick off. Although we had plenty of bed heads evident (except you Abbey of course!) the whole team were enthusiastic and ready to go, eg. a congo line to the middle of the oval for the start!
The game was played at a good pace and you could see how far both teams have come since they last met in Rd 9. The last quarter however saw the Emu Lions run away with it to win the game by 5 goals. Player of the match was Jordan who also managed a hat trick of goals. He was welll supported throughout by the rest of the team led by Captain for the day Shamous. Encouragement awards also went out to Oliver, James and Heath. Well done Lions!

The Lions faced Campbelltown/Wollondilly Swans at Shaw Park this week in perfect football conditions. The Lions matched the Swans in the first quarter, however, the second quarter saw the Swans establish a 12 point lead by half time. The Lions tried hard all day however the Swans gradually extended their lead throughout the remainder of the game.
Morgan Pollock had another good game today and battled hard in the middle. He was well supported by Jeremy Rix who played a strong game, running hard all day. Pat Pope returned to the team this week after a week’s absence due to injury and was inspirational, working hard all around the ground. Adrian Boelhouwer was very busy early in the game and was shifted to full forward in the second half and finished the day with 3 goals. Liam Worth played a strong game today and Blake Langer ran hard all day and did a great job for the Lions.
Chris Nolan played another solid game driving the Lions into attack repeatedly. Julian Borg also returned to the team today and made his presence felt in the backline. Jake Jeffreys-Brown was again active in the forward line and played well for the Lions. Beau Dingemans spent the day in the backline gave the Lions plenty of drive from half back. Stephen Webb also spent the day in the backline and tried hard all day and made life difficult for the Swans forwards. Simon Masters played another solid game on the wing giving the Lions that important link into the forward line.
Although the Lions played well this week they could not match the Swans running players. The Swans held a 12 point lead at half time and stretched that to 30 points at the final siren.

Round 15 1st August 2009 v Blue Mountains Kangaroos
Shaw Park under warm sunny skies was the venue for the game between the finals bound Lions and the Blue Mountains Kangaroos. Nick Adams was there with the runner’s shirt on but he couldn’t go far on the crutches he had from last week’s game as he looks like missing the rest of the season with a damaged ACL in his knee. Dylan Slater was missing but coaches Rix and Stevens had a headache juggling a 27 man bench with Pat, Jeremy, Chris, and Adrian backing up from the 14’s while Ashley Nicholls played his second game. Paul Devlin, Tim Wade and Bob Mitchell (assisted by Tom Kelly) all took up their usual positions and with the home crowd enjoying the sun on their backs – it was all eyes on the football.
The first few minutes of the game saw the play go to and fro, but finally Ben scored the first of many for the afternoon. Increasing pressure in the Kangaroos forward fifty saw Blake snap a goal from about 20m out. The Kangaroos then applied some pressure themselves and they score their opening goal. An inability to get the ball into our forward 50 and some good pressure at the contests from the Kangaroos saw them score another goal, so again the Lions would have to lift. The Lions did just that with Alex H. getting a free kick and giving a neat pass to Hayden inside the forward 50. He missed the goal but shortly afterwards with some good pressure and neat handpassing by a number of our forwards he goaled for the Lions to go to the first break ahead 3 – 4 – 22 to the Kangaroos 2 – 1 – 13.
An ominous start for the second quarter began with the Lions winning the centre, passing to Marty going forward who gave a neat pass to Ben in front of goal. Ben kicked the first of 5 goals for the quarter. The next 2 goals though went to Dan Kelly one from the forward pocket and his second after a centring kick from Hayden. Hayden was in the action again with the Kangaroos finding it difficult to get the ball out from their defensive 50, he played on from an intercepted pass to goal. Again the pressure in clearing the ball showed for the Kangaroos as Pat Pope marked form a kick out and then centred for Ben to dribble through a goal. Hayden tried to kick a long range goal – but that man McGovern marked right on the goal line to make sure of it. Ben’s last goal for the quarter was a long range attempt that travelled over 45m. Not wanting to strain him too much, coach Rix gave Ben the rest of the quarter off but the scoring continued. Alex H. roved the ball and kicked long to the goal square for Jeremy Rix to take a great mark running into the square. With his goal the Lions look set to mercy rule their opposition for the first time this season with a half time lead 12 – 9 – 81 to 2 – 1 – 13.
The third quarter was a “rusty affair” as the Lions lost their accuracy and the Kangaroos tried to lift their efforts. Michael snapped the first goal of the quarter, but then the Kangaroos got a goal back. Some missed opportunities by the Lions and 50 metre free to the Kangaroos and they had their second goal of the quarter. A great centre punch and some neat roving by Shaun saw the ball go down to Ben who goaled. Ben was in the action again as he kicked over his shoulder to the goal square for Mitch Jeffries-Brown to play on and score his first goal of the season. Finally some neat roving of hands saw Alex H. run into an open goal for his first for the game. It was the Lions 16 – 15 – 111 to the Kangaroos 4 – 3 – 27, one goal short of the mercy rule.
The last quarter was a goal-a-thon by the Lions as they ran away with the game. Some major changes to give other players opportunity didn’t seem to dampen the Lions efforts. Sam playing on the half forward line bombed to the goal square for Ben to kick his 8th goal. James and Luke then scored goals as pressure continued on the Kangaroos. Luke’s second goal saw him get “hooked” by the coaches as they rotated reserves through the forward line to give everyone a go! James kicked 2 more goals for the quarter and he was “hooked”. The call came from the bench to get Sam into a scoring position so a neat pass from David saw Sam take a chest mark on a lead. He then calmly kicked his first goal for years as he has been an outstanding defender for most of his AFL career! Great long kicks by Tom and Brayden saw Shaun finish of a great move to kick a 45m goal. It was the Lions in a canter 24 – 18 – 162 to the Kangaroos 5 – 4 – 34.
Awards could have been given to the entire team as everyone had a great game! However, Mitchell Jeffries Brown was given the Dominoes award for sustained effort while Ben’s 8 goals will see him rest up with a Latte and a doughnut at Krispy Kremes. Others to get a notable mention include Hayden Strong, Brayden, Shaun, and David. It was a satisfying win showing the versatility of most of the players leading into the finals. Next week the Lions return to Shaw Park for the final time as we take on Campbelltown in the second last game of the regular season. We hope to see all our supporters for our last “temporary home ground” match.
